Wakefield coach John Kear has agreed a new contract to remain in charge of the Wildcats until the end of next season.

Former Hull boss Kear took over at Belle Vue on a short-term basis a month ago following the departure of Tony Smith.

Kear, 51, was handed the task of trying to save the struggling engage Super League club from relegation but he will stay on regardless of what competition they play in in 2007.

Wildcats chairman Steve Ferres said: "Working with John since he has been here has given myself and the board of directors the confidence that he is the correct man to take over as Wildcats head coach for next season."

Kear has won two of his first three matches since taking charge. The club remain in the competition's relegation position with just three games remaining but they are only one point behind Castleford and two behind Wigan and Huddersfield.

Kear said: "I consider myself a Super League coach and will give all my best endeavours to ensure that I am still a Super League coach next year but if we have to take a step back to take two steps forward, so be it.

"However, the infrastructure is right for progress at this club."

Wakefield have also confirmed main sponsors Eric France and Son will remain associated with the club in 2007, meaning they should be able to maintain a full-time squad if relegated.
