John Kear: Settled in quickly at Wakefield.
Kear commits to Wakefield... even if they are relegated
John Ledger

JOHN KEAR yesterday pledged his commitment to Wakefield Trinity by agreeing an extended contract with the Belle Vue club and reiterated his determination to keep the Wildcats in Super League.
Trinity have won two of their three matches since Kear took over from the sacked Tony Smith last month but are a point adrift of Castleford Tigers and two points below Huddersfield and Wigan and remain favourites to go down.
However, the 51-year-old still feels Wakefield have the ability to stay up and believes two wins from their three remaining matches, starting with a win at Challenge Cup winners St Helens tonight, would take them to safety.
"I still think we'll stay up. I'm a Super League coach and Wakefield Trinity still have every chance of being a Super League club next year," said Kear, whose new contract runs to the end of 2007.
"Even if the worst came to the worst I know that come the start of the 2008 season Wakefield will be in much better shape than they are now, no matter what competition we play in next year.
"It's a risk on my part but a calculated one. The easy thing would have been for me to walk away at the end of this year or for Wakefield to wait and see what happens before deciding whether they wanted me to stay.
"Sometimes you have to trust your instinct and back yourself and I'm confident that this is the right move for both me and Wakefield. We have improved in the few weeks that I've been here and there's a lot of improvement left in us. I'm still convinced that the contract I have signed is a Super League contract."
Kear, who was sacked by Hull in mid-season, takes his team to Knowsley Road this evening in the belief their Cup win will not have as marked an effect on St Helens as it did the two teams he steered to Challenge Cup glory, Sheffield in 1998 and Hull last year.
"For Sheffield the Wembley win was the club's first major trophy while Hull had not enjoyed success like that for 23 years and it took a massive emotional toll on everyone involved with both clubs," he said. "Last week was Saints' fifth Cup win in the last 11 years, most of their players will have their feet firmly on the ground come Friday night and we've prepared to play a very strong and very focused St Helens team."
Saints are without two members of the team that beat Huddersfield at Twickenham last Saturday but have been able to call on Kiwi Test utility Vinnie Anderson, former Great Britain prop Nick Fozzard and Academy international Mike Bennett as cover.
Wakefield, by contrast, are down to the bare bones through injury and suspension which have stripped them of the services of Ned Catic, Darrell Griffin, Jamie Field, Duncan MacGillivray and Tommy Saxton.
However, Tevita Latu, the former Cronulla hooker who has rejoined them after returning to Australia to carry out community service, is set to make his debut.
