Cat Power Announces More Shows

And then there were six... more Cat Power dates than were available to report last month, that is. Chan Marshall must be diligently loading up on her vitamin C, because the chanteuse is scheduling shows like she still has nine lives to blow through. Exclusive: The Streets to Tour With Lady Sovereign

Those rubbed the wrong way by The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living, and/or those with a hankering for the pre-fame Streets of yore, rest somewhat assured: Mike Skinner is not nearly as huge here in the States as he is in the Queen's land. Not quite yet, anyhow. That may all change, however, after the reigning Brit MC laureate takes a royal tour of North America this June, with fellow mic-monarch Lady Sovereign at his side.

The jaunt kicks off in Seattle on June 7; perhaps Mr. Skinner will be humbled some by the slightly-smaller crowds that receive him. Or perhaps his ego will shoot sky-high following a UK-spanning trek kicking off later this month? Either way, the boy will entertain. Maybe he'll have tea and brandy on tap onstage again too.

No fake Streets hats here:

04-27 Manchester, England - Apollo
04-28 Glasgow, Scotland - Carling Academy
04-29 Edinburgh, Scotland - Corn Exchange
04-30 Aberdeen, Scotland - Aberdeen Music Hall
05-02 Newcastle, England - Carling Academy
05-03 Nottingham, England - Rock City
05-04 Bristol, England - Colston Hall
05-06 Liverpool, England - Liverpool Academy
05-07 Birmingham, England - Carling Academy
05-08 Southampton, England - Southampton Guildhall
05-10 Exeter, England - Great Hall

06-24 Chicago, IL - Intonation Music Festival *
06-27 New York, NY - Webster Hall *
07-01 Roskilde, Denmark - Roskilde Festival *

* with Lady Sovereign

If you're not quite ready for the live Streets experience, watch Skinner spit serious game on a telly near you: dude hits up "Jimmy Kimmel Live" on June 12, and then "Late Show With David Letterman" on June 30. Just, you know, try not to lose any money in there while you're tuning in.

Lady Sov will release the limited edition CD/DVD Blah Blah EP on Island in the UK on April 17. It contains the following audio tracks:

01 Blah Blah
02 Little Bit of Shhh
03 Public Warning
04 Drunk on Radiation

The DVD features the "Blah Blah" video and a making-of documentary.

The Biggest Midget in the Game also has quite a few festival dates of her own scheduled for this spring and summer. Save the hoodie here:

04-29 Indio, CA - Coachella
07-05 Kristiansand, Norway - Quart Festival

Kanye, Deerhoof, Feist, Tribe to Rock Bumbershoot

Ah, Seattle, that erstwhile capital of grunge, and eternal capital of rain. When it came time to pick a funny word for their annual "Music & Arts" festival, the city found a good one: bumbershoot--meaning, appropriately, "umbrella." Now in its impressive 36th year (take that, Coachbonnagooserado!), the Bumbershooters have just announced the initial lineup for the 2006 edition of their festival, set to explode Labor Day weekend in the shadow of the Space Needle (provided the clouds actually part), also known as the Seattle Center.

Topping the bill is festival-whore Kanye West and the reunited A Tribe Called Quest. Other acts of note include Deerhoof, Feist, Jamie Lidell, Atmosphere, Mates of State, Of Montreal, the Blood Brothers, Bettye Lavette, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, the English Beat (!), the Gossip, Laura Veirs, Nouvelle Vague, Vashti Bunyan, Metric, Dengue Fever, and a triple-threat of pop-punk: Hawthorne Heights, AFI, and Yellowcard.

Festival organizers opted to hold this year's Bumbershoot on a Saturday-Monday, September 2-4, rather than the Friday-Monday schedule of previous years. Passes for the multi-venue festival go on sale July 15 on the fest's website.

So that's the Music side of things. What about the Arts? The Bumber also boasts two comedy tents, a poster art fair, readings from authors, a film festival, and a freakin' roller-derby. So, like, something for the whole family.

In summation: Bummer-shoot 2006? Hells no!

Bright Eyes Working With Janet Weiss, M. Ward

Look! Off on the horizon! There it is-- a new Bright Eyes album! Slated for a spring 2007 release! According to Billboard.com, Conor Oberst, superproducer Mike Mogis, and frequent Saddle Creek collaborator Nate Walcott are hard at work on the follow-up to 2005's I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning and Digital Ash in a Digital Urn. The trio is in the studio chipping 25-30 songs down to 10-12 for the final product. Unless, of course, they decide to go all double-album on us again.

Billboard.com also reports that drum goddess Janet Weiss (Sleater-Kinney, Quasi), John Fahey worshipper M. Ward, and old-timey siren Gillian Welch have been "tapped" for the album. That sounds kinda dirty.

At this point in time, Bright Eyes have but two tour dates scheduled. The first is a set at Bonnaroo on June 16. The second will be a free hometown concert at Omaha, Nebraska's Memorial Park on June 17, according to the Omaha World-Herald. Jason Kulbel of Saddle Creek also told the World-Herald that Bright Eyes have a three-week tour of Canada in the works for this summer. So stay tuned.

As reported earlier this morning, Bright Eyes will be featured on the Coachella documentary DVD, which is set for an April 18 release on Anti- Records.

Exclusive: The Boy Least Likely To Announce U.S. Tour

With the time-wasting games Fur Ball Pong and Little Donkey on their website, we're not sure how the Boy Least Likely To manage to draw fans away from the computer for their performances.

Somehow, the cutesters manage. After wrapping up a month-long tour with chart-topping chick magnet James Blunt last week, the Boy Least Likely To are ready for life on the road once again. After a few shows in England, they'll return to North America for a headlining club tour at the end of May. That means they'll be playing for audiences who actually want to see them, not freaking out people waiting to hear "You're Beautiful".

This is going to be so fun, yes?

The Best Party Ever, the band's 2005 debut album (and Pitchfork's 47th favorite of the year), is now available on iTunes and will hit shelves in American record stores on May 2. The band's own Too Young To Die label will release it, and it will be distributed by the Coalition of Independent Music Stores' Junketboy distro. Just in time for May flowers.

Jimmy Tamborello Preps James Figurine Album

Back in 2001, producer Jimmy Tamborello (best known as one half of the Postal Service), as part of his group Figurine, toured Germany with Lali Puna. By his account, they only had a few tapes in the van, "mostly techno." In a case of musical Stockholm Syndrome, Tamborello became fascinated with the stuff. Recently, he set out to make a minimal, melodic solo record, but "my technopop tendencies got the best of me, the songs slowly filled up, and this is what I ended up with."

"This" is Mistake Mistake Mistake Mistake Mistake, Tamborello's forthcoming LP, to be released by Plug Research on July 25. It's credited to the Ramones-style stage name James Figurine, rather than Dntel, Tamborello's usual solo moniker. Why? Who knows.

Mistake boasts guest spots from King of Convenience Erlend Øye and the unavoidable Jenny Lewis.

Tracklist:

1. 55566688833 (feat. Sonya Westcott)
2. Leftovers
3. Ruining the Sundays
4. Pretend It's a Race and I'm on Your Side
5. You Again (feat. Jenny Lewis)

Aphex Twin, B&S, Silver Jews Play Triptych Festival

There are a boatload of music festivals in the UK and Europe but few, if any, can top Scotland's Triptych in terms of sheer ambition and scope. Truly, it may very well be the coolest festival...IN THE WORLD.

Spanning five days (April 26-30) and three cities (Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Aberdeen), Triptych presents over 100 jaw-dropping artists-- seriously, it looks like a bunch of top ten lists exploded all over the place. This year features A Certain Ratio (!), Belle and Sebastian, Mogwai, the Fire Engines (!!), Long Blondes, Arab Strap, Aphex Twin (!!!), Silver Jews, Vashti Bunyan, Roxanne Shante (!!!!), and all of the following people:

Countrymen Belle and Sebastian and Arab Strap will curate special events, and if all that wasn't enough, Triptych will also screen films. Titles include "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey," the Charles Mingus documentary "Triumph of the Underdog," and the appropriate "Festival!" which showcases the performances of Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Joan Baez, and Triptych performer Odetta, among others, at the Newport Folk Festival in the 1960s. To cap off Triptych, three film crews will create and screen a documentary of the festival itself.

Damn, we sure wish we lived in Scotland right now.

Aloha Tour America Again

We're beginning to wonder if Aloha's name is in someway tied with the fact that they're constantly saying hello and goodbye to city after city after city. Dudes never stop touring! Man alive.

Today is no exception, as the four-piece are once again on the road in support of their latest record, Some Echoes, which dropped on Polyvinyl just yesterday. As usual, they'll be performing with a laundry list of artists along the way. We're just thankful that there were enough symbols on the keyboard to denote everyone this time around.

Red Krayola to Introduce Introduction

Mayo Thompson is made of the stuff of legends; his history is confusing and complex, to say the least. Under his own name as well as various guises, including the Red Krayola, he has performed with innumerable lineups, acted as guest in backing bands for other artists, produced a long string of influential singles and albums and, along the way, recorded classic examples of slanted but enchanting music. The Fall, the Raincoats, Scritti Politti, Kleenex, Primal Scream, Felt, and Stiff Little Fingers are but a few acts who had releases touched by Thompson's hand.

The Red Krayola band/concept has never been retired by Thompson, and he continues to ramble through the decades. The next entry in the Red Krayola lexicon is Introduction, due out on April 18 on Drag City. It isn't a primer, though; it's all new tunes.

Backing Thompson on the LP are Charlie Abel, Noel Kupersmith (Brokeback, Sin Ropas, Chicago Underground Trio/Quartet), Stephen Prina, Tom Watson, and John McEntire (the Sea and Cake, Tortoise), who recorded and mixed the album at his Soma Electronic Music Studios.

Tracklist:

01 Introduction
02 Breakout
03 Cruise Ship
04 Note to Selves
05 L.G.F.
06 A Tale of Two...
07 Psy Ops
08 It Will Be (Delivered)
09 Puff
10 Greasy Street
11 Vexations
12 Elegy
13 When She Went Swimming
14 Swerving
15 Bling Bling

The Red Krayola have three gigs booked in support of the record. And they are:

04-29 Los Angeles, CA - The Getty Center
04-30 Los Angeles, CA - Spaceland
05-01 San Francisco, CA - Café du Nord

Drag City is also busy preparing a Red Krayola documentary, and they've asked for the public's help in collecting "archival live footage, audio recordings, photos, handbills, posters, and anything Red Krayola-related that might be useful." If you're able to help out, contact Amy Cargill at rkmovie@dragcity.com.

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin Tour U.S.

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin are not just fighting for the title of Most "Difficult" Band Name In Music Today against contenders like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness, You Say Party! We Say Die!, Battle/Battles/The Battles, and Figurine/Figurines/The Figurines.

The Springfield, Missouri quartet are also fighting for the love of kids across America, or at least the ones on the West Coast. That's right, they're coming to a campus or a coffee shop (and maybe even a campus coffee shop) near you. In fact, they've already started!

So tonight, Tulsans, don't be discouraged by the name of the Deadtown Tavern (Note to management: You want to attract customers, not crush their dreams). Show Boris some love...still. The band will be supporting their 2005 self-released album Broom, which is just the kind of nice, short name we've been wanting you to bring home for some time.
