LAWYER COMMENTS ON TREY SONGZ ARREST: Singer nabbed in Atlanta earlier this month for disorderly conduct.
(April 25, 2006)
*A lawyer for R&B singer Trey Songz is questioning his client’s April 6 arrest by police at Clark Atlanta University, who charged the artist with obstruction of law enforcement and disorderly conduct. Songz, (real name is Tremain Neverson), was riding in the passenger seat of a vehicle that was pulled over on campus for a traffic violation. According to witnesses, Songz was arrested when refused orders to exit the vehicle. His lawyer, Curtis L. Hubbard, Jr., says the charges have no merit. “He did not obstruct any law enforcement personnel, nor was his conduct in simply remaining seated in the vehicle disorderly or disruptive," Hubbard said. According to the attorney, Songz suffered minor injuries during his run-in with the officers. "[The injuries] were non-life threatening, which he received treatment for at Grady Memorial Hospital," Hubbard explained. "Mr. Neverson has faith in the criminal justice system and he is confident that the charges currently pending against him will be dismissed." On the day of the arrest, Songz’ mother, April Tucker, sent an e-mail to friends, witnesses and media outlets expressing her thanks for their support, and frustration with the Clark Atlanta PD. It read: “As many of you may know by now, my son, Trey was a victim of excessive force by a member of the Clark/Atlanta campus police! It is with mixed emotions that I come to you to thank you all for your witness statements, kind words, thought & prayers for Trey during this difficult time. We have had contact with him & he is okay. He is being held overnight for obstruction of justice & disorderly conduct for merely refusing to get out of the passenger seat of a car! I can’t even fathom that these fraudulent charges will stand up in a court of law! Again, as always thanks for your continued support!
Much love, Mama Songz April Tucker”
