Three Six Mafia the first hip-hop act to perform.
Three Six Mafia did the double at last night's Academy Awards, becoming the first rap group to perform at the event, as well as walking away with the Oscar for best song.
Held yesterday (March 6) at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, the awards have already seen a host of rap winners walk through their doors - most recently Eminem for '8 Mile - but had never received a live performance, which goes out to over a billion viewers.
Introducing the band, rapper/actor Ludacris said it was a highlight, "I'm proud to be part of history, the first time hip-hop is performed at the Oscars," he said on the red carpet.
The song, which is featured in the film 'Hustle and Flow', is performed in the film by best-actor nominee Terrence Howard, and beat off competition from Dolly Parton's "Travelin' Thru" from the road movie "Transamerica," and Kathleen "Bird" York and Michael Becker's "In the Deep", from the best-picture Oscar winner "Crash."
The Oscar for best composer went to Argentinean Gustavo Santaolalla for his score to Oscar-winning director Ang Lee's "Brokeback Mountain."
