'The Network' is a 5-piece New Wave band who released their debut album Money Money 2020, on the independent record label Adeline Records on September 30, 2003. A re-release of the album, with two bonus tracks, followed in 2004.
Members
The band is rumored to consist of the members of the band Green Day and two other musicians, rumored to be members of the band Devo. Their stage names are Fink, The Snoo, Van Gough, Captain Underpants, and Z. It should be noted that Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong's alter ego is known as Wilhelm Fink and Green Day drummer Tré Cool went by King Underpants in the band The Lookouts, but is widely-known to be The Snoo. Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt is a vegan; so is Van Gough of The Network. These are clues as to the identities of the individual members, and it is known for certain that the members of Green Day are in The Network, but it is hard to discern which member of Green Day corresponds to which member of The Network.
Billie Joe Armstrong dismisses Green Day's involvement in The Network as but a rumor, ostensibly for publicity purposes. Although the style of music is different (New Wave as opposed to Green Day's Pop Punk stylings), Armstrong's voice can be unmistakably made out on several Money Money 2020 tracks. The official Network band site claims that "Fink" put out the money for the band himself. In reality, Billie Joe Armstrong fronted the money for the band himself, as they are signed to the record company he co-owns.
More evidence of Green Day's membership in the band comes from Billie Joe Armstrong's second and least well-known band Pinhead Gunpowder. On his biography page, The Network is mentioned as one of his "other bands".
Another possible member of the band could be Reto Peter, a Swiss producer. This is suggested by an (obviously faked) press conference seen at the end of the DVD Disease is Punishment where questions by the press are answered in Swiss German by one of the band members. Reto Peter is also the co-producer of the album Money Money 2020 and one of its songs is called "Reto".
