The Brian Jonestown Massacre Information
|
|
'The Brian Jonestown Massacre' is a psychedelic rock band originally from San Francisco, California, led by Anton Newcombe. The band has undergone a large number of personnel changes; Newcombe is the only member who has played with the Brian Jonestown Massacre since its beginning. Tamborine player Joel Gion has stayed with him the longest. The band is unfortunately best known for their open advocacy of drug use and their feud with The Dandy Warhols, which is one of the subjects of the 2004 documentary DiG!. That documentary outlines the relationship between the two bands and the conflicts and the dilemmas bands are put into when dealing with record companies. The Dandys and BJM appear to have buried the hatchet, as Newcombe joined the Warhols onstage at Lollapalooza in July of 2005. Originally Newcombe was heavily influenced by The Rolling Stones' psychedelic phase - the name comes from Stones guitarist Brian Jones combined with a reference to cult leader Jim Jones, and their second album's title,"Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request", is a reference to the Stones' 1967 album "Their Satanic Majesties' Request". Newcombe's work in the 2000s has expanded into aesthetic dimensions approximating the UK shoegazing genre of the 1990s and incorporating influences from world music, especially Middle Eastern and Brazilian. The band is currently based in Los Angeles, California. Ex-Brian Jonestown Massacre member Peter Hayes is a member of the San Francisco band the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Ex-member Matt Hollywood is a founding member of the band The Out Crowd. Rumor has it that Joel Gion "the tamborine player" works at Amoeba on Haight St. in San Francisco.
