'Tegan and Sara Quin' (born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on September 19 1980, identical twins) are Canadian singer-songwriters, performing as 'Tegan and Sara'. They got their start by winning a local music competition, Calgary's "Garage Warz." Since then, the two have toured extensively with many artists, including Neil Young, Rufus Wainwright, Ryan Adams, Ben Folds, The Pretenders, The Killers, Little Birdy and Weezer. They are signed to Neil Young's Vapor Records. Tegan lives in Vancouver, British Columbia and Sara lives in Montreal, Quebec.
Originally the duo was known as "Sara and Tegan," but they decided to switch the names because of two reasons. Firstly, Tegan is a more unique name than Sara, so this would make them stand out more to music fans. Also, when written for the website address, saraandtegan.com looked weird.
In late 2004, Rolling Stone magazine named them on their list of the best 50 albums of the year.
The twins tell comic stories on stage, a throwback to their folk roots. Their sisterly bickering is part of the show and endears them greatly to their fans. However, the girls evince nothing but the highest level of professionalism in their work. Each writes her own songs. Tegan says she writes songs "like a fish lays eggs." She might pump out a few songs a week, most of which are immediately jettisonned. Sara's songs, on the other hand, evolve slowly and methodically and almost always make it onto the record.
Recently, The White Stripes did a live cover of Tegan and Sara's song "Walking With A Ghost," which is available on iTunes as of October 2005. The girls' songs have also appeared on the movie soundtrack for Sweet November and Tegan has performed vocals for a Target commercial.
