This Bird Has Flown
A 40th Anniversary Tribute to the Beatles'...
Filter Grade: 68%
by Tristan Staddon

Is there anything Ted Leo can't cover? His skittish rendering of "I'm Looking Through You" is one of the few highlights on this tribute commemorating Christmastime consumerism and its need for a seasonal Beatles tie-in (we're looking through you, Razor & Tie). Okay, make the reason (for the season?) the anniversary of Rubber Soul and, along with Leo, extend props to the Donnas for exercising such impressive restraint on "Drive My Car." But for every artist that breaks convention to dazzling effect (Sufjan Stevens pushes "What Goes On" to almost six salad-tossing minutes) there are two others whose missteps make for giant muff-ups (Ben Harper's irksome reggae version of "Michelle" and Ben Lee's decaffeinated mind-number, "Wait"). Ultimately, the Fiery Furnaces best honor the Foursome with their take on "Norwegian Wood." Sexy and enchanting as ever, the Friedbergers nail it--Eleanor even leaving the last vocal unspoken as Matt crashes the keys down shrilly. The song seemingly incomplete, we're left to ponder its elegance as the echo fades away. Too bad we're also left with 12 other songs.
