MTV brings 'Invasion' to Shawnee State

By KELLY HOLLERAN
The Herald-Dispatch

After a successful show two years ago, MTV's Campus Invasion Tour will return to Shawnee State University on May 3 with three bands -- Motion City Soundtrack, Straylight Run and Hellogoodbye.

"The students and community reacted very well to the tour two years ago, and we're hoping for the same reaction this year," Tiffany Weaver, adviser of the Student Programming Board at Shawnee State University, said.

If people respond as anticipated, the Campus Invasion Tour will sell out.

"We are currently the only Ohio stop on the tour," Allen said. "People from as far away as Indiana have called asking for information."

The Student Programming Board hopes that in addition to the travelers, many students will attend the tour and react as enthusiastically this year as they did two years ago.

"Last time, the band Hoobastank came with them (MTV)," said Wayne Allen, vice president of the Student Programming Board. "We sold out the show. We sold 700 tickets the day of the show."

Although Hoobastank is not with the tour this year, the three bands participating are up-and-coming and popular among college students. By the time they reach Shawnee State, the bands may have picked up an even bigger fan base.

"Throughout the tour, the bands pick up a larger following," Allen said. "Hopefully, by the time they come here, they will be even more popular."

When Nina Pena, a junior early childhood education major from McArthur, Ohio, heard the bands and MTV were coming to Shawnee State, she knew she had to attend.

"Everyone on campus will be there," she said. "Last time they came, it was really exciting."

Weaver hopes students and the community will take advantage of this rare opportunity.

"Being that Shawnee State University is small, normally this isn't something that happens every week," she said. "To be a part of the tour is very special. It's a wonderful opportunity for students to participate in an event that is geared toward them."

The Campus Invasion Tour is part of Shawnee State University's annual Springfest, which is a weeklong celebration the Student Programming Board organizes.

Tickets for the Campus Invasion Tour are $16 for students and $21 for the public.

"We added $1 to the ticket sales this year," Allen said. "The extra dollar will go to the charity LIFEbeat."

LIFEbeat is a charity founded by the music industry that spreads an AIDS prevention message to youth.
