Hoobastank's new "If I Were You" single was inspired by the band's frustrating experiences on a tour last spring with Velvet Revolver.
"The audience was filled with guys who love Guns N' Roses and Stone Temple Pilots and think everyone else should go to hell," singer Doug Robb told MTV News of the experience. "People would turn their backs to us the whole time and keep their middle fingers in the air.
"But they were probably really upset because they found some rust spots on their Camaros, or because they got their mullets caught in the door while tailgating, and they were like, 'Ow! Damn it! I'm gonna go mess with Hoobastank!'"
The single from the group's forthcoming third album is targeted at people who take things for granted, which apparently includes Velvet Revolver singer Scott Weiland, who drummer Chris Hesse said ignored them on the tour because he was too busy yelling at his assistant.
"If I Were You" incorporates a toy piano following the bass line, which some fans may have a bit of trouble with, but it hasn't prevented it from getting off to a strong start at rock radio. Its video was directed by Hype Williams, and Robb said that it was shot "guerrilla-style around the world" and is meant to "capture a bunch of images of youthful exuberance."
Every Man For Himself, the follow-up to 2003's The Reason, will be released by Island Def Jam on May 16. It was produced by Howard Benson, who recorded that platinum-certified album and has also worked with P.O.D. and My Chemical Romance.
