CUT ME SOME SLACK: Your favorite slackers return to the big screen in "Clerks II," which stars Jeff Anderson, Jason Mewes, Rosario Dawson and Kevin Smith (who also directed). It's not rated, and opens Friday at Governor's Square and Tallahassee Mall.

JUMP IN THE 'WATER': An apartment manager (Paul Giamatti) falls in love with a waif-like, mysterious young woman (Bryce Dallas Howard) he rescues from the pool and tries to protect from some very nasty beasties in "Lady in the Water." The latest exercise in spooky cinema from director M. Night Shyamalan is rated PG-13 and opens Friday at Governor's Square and Tallahassee Mall.

HOME, SCARY HOME: Neighborhood adults don't believe three children when they insist a house in the 'hood is really an evil living entity in "Monster House." Steve Buscemi, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Jason Lee are among the actors supplying voices for the animated characters. It's rated PG and opens Friday at Governor's Square and Tallahassee Mall.

BREAKING UP IS HARD TO DO: The powers of a woman scorned are amazing indeed in "My Super Ex-Girlfriend," which stars Luke Wilson as a New Yorker who breaks up with his girlfriend (Uma Thurman), only to find out she's actually a super-hero named G-Girl. It's directed by Ivan Reitman, is rated PG-13 and opens Friday at Governor's Square and Tallahassee Mall.
DRAMA OF DANCE: The Tallahassee Film Society teams up with the Tallahassee Argentine Tango Society to present a night of film and tango dancing at 7:30 p.m. Friday at All Saints Cinema, 918 1/2 Railroad Ave. The evening features a screening of steamy cult classic "Naked Tango," followed by a tango dancing session. The movie is rated R, so leave the kids at home. The last tango movie night sold out, so get there early to make sure you get a seat. Cost is $6 for the public, $5 for TFS and TATS members. AHOY, MATEY!: Catch a screening of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday at the Dixie Theatre in downtown Apalachicola. Tickets are $6. The box office opens 30 minutes before show time. Call (850) 653-3456.

VARIETY IS THE SPICE: The days of the "really big shew" are back with the Variety Show for America at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Leaf Theatre in downtown Quincy. The show features old-style entertainment, including a big band, singers (including British vocalist Bobby Kemp, pictured above), a magician, comedians, a Chinese balancing act and more. PUT ON YOUR PARROTHEAD: The Tallahassee Parrothead Club and Barnacle Bill's present the Second Annual Parrothead Phrenzy to benefit Alzheimer's patients in the Big Bend area. The tropical-themed event takes place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Moon, 1105 E. Lafayette St., and features music by Jimmy Parrish & the Ocean Waves, a seafood spread, a Seaside Silent Auction and more. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Call 878-6900.

'SEUSSICAL' APPRECIATION: The fantastical world of Theodore Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss, springs to tuneful life in the joint Theatre A La Carte/Tallahassee Little Theatre production of "Seussical, the Musical" at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at TLT, 1861 Thomasville Road. HOW TO SURVIVE: Hear indie rock from the cutting edge when Philly band Circa Survive plays at 7:30 p.m. today at the Beta Bar, 809 Railroad Ave. The group is touring to tout its fierce new CD "Juturna." It has already logged a lot of miles on the disc's behalf as opening act for such groups as Thrice, Coheed and Cambria, My Chemical Romance, Motion City Soundtrack and Saves the Day.
