Record Review: Leigh Nash, 'Blue on Blue'

San Antonio Express-ews

(One Son Records)

It's been two years since the demise of Sixpence None the Richer, and in that time the adorable face and voice of that Christian-leaning act has gone through some changes: She's a mom, she's celebrated her 30th birthday and she's writing her own songs.

Nash's first solo album, recorded in Montreal and produced by Pierre Marchand, is a (not surprisingly) breezy, light, lovely and sometimes lush indie affair. Its themes are dominated by love, domesticity and joyful motherhood. Her delicate, breathy voice makes this a CD that one can live with for days in the car stereo.

Many of these songs go straight to the heart — the single "My Idea of Heaven" and "Angel Tonight" sound like hits — and there are subtle, darker double-meaning twists on exceptional album cuts like the Dido-styled "Along the Wall" and the breathtakingly emotional "Blue." A seductive disc that grows on you.
