For a number of British musicians (Pete Doherty, The Darkness' Justin Hawkins, etc.), rehab almost seems to have become a right of passage. Sadly, you can add Robbie Williams to the list of UK stars struggling with a dependency. On the day of his 33rd birthday, Williams checked himself into rehab, where he will receive treatment for an addiction to prescription medication.
"Robbie Williams has today been admitted into a treatment center in America for his dependency on prescription drugs," his public relations agent was quoted as saying. "There will be no further comment on this matter."
The Newcastle-born Williams is a genuine British megastar whose success never quite translated to the U.S., despite his determination to win over American audiences. Nevertheless, each respective album goes on to sell nearly two million copies each in his home country alone. His latest album, Rudebox, has sold three million copies worldwide, and features collaborations with William Orbit, the Pet Shop Boys and Lilly Allen.
