on the verge: Lyrics Born
|
|
|
|
You already know Lyrics Born -- even if you think you don't. Maybe you heard his
underground hit "Callin' Out" featured in a Motorola commercial, or maybe you tuned into HBO's Entourage and heard this versatile singer/MC tearin' it up James Brown-style
on the scorching "I Changed My Mind." You might have even caught him laying down his funky, frenetic brand of East Bay hip-hop at Bonnaroo or Coachella (oh yeah -- he'll be at Lollapalooza, too).
But if you haven't caught him yet, just stick around. This Tokyo-born, California-bred rapper is poised to shake up plenty of people's expectations about what hip-hop can do.
Listen: Callin' Out

artist picks: Mason Jennings
|
|
|
Singer-songwriter Mason Jennings blends the deeply personal insights of a poet and
the political broadsides of a protest singer with the broad musical eclecticism of a jazz musician and the passion of a rock and roller.
The result has made him one of the most-talked about young artists on the acoustic music scene and earned him a loyal cult following. It also made us wonder where
this Minneapolis-based troubadour gets his inspiration -- so we asked him for a list of his favorite albums. Here's what he came back with.
|
 |
Bob Dylan
Blood on the Tracks |
"The songwriting is so top class that it
isn't even funny. He is just letting it come through. Very grateful is
what I feel when I listen to this one. A masterwork."
|
 |
Led Zeppelin
In Through the Out Door |
"I should of just listed all the
Zeppelin records. This music is a miracle to me. I have no clue how they
did it. Magic, deep, old, old music. Yeah, I know it's rock, but put it up
next to Tibetan Monks singing or some old Indian ragas and which one
sounds older? Amazing. I love it. Just check out the way the record
begins (and ends). Wow!!!"
|
 |
Johnny Cash
American Recordings |
"I heard this when I left my home for
the first time after I dropped out of high school and, well, I don't
know, I just couldn't imagine anything sounding more real. Still can't. A
great teacher."
|
 |
Joanna Newsom
The Milk-Eyed Mender |
"I bought this record in Asheville
N.C. after staying up all night the night before, walking with some
friends along the river. I listened to it the next day while driving through the
hills on the way to Kentucky. Spring was in bloom and all the trees were
pink and there was a smokey mist working it's way through the farmland.
So beautiful. A drive that changed my life. A record that is a galaxy unto
itself."
|
 |
Bob Marley
Catch a Fire |
"I used to think all reggae sounded the same. Then I heard this record and my world opened up. Marley sort of took
over my life for a few years. Such a good band on this record and I never
doubt that he means every word he sings. He's tapping into some deep current
every time."
|
 |
Neil Young
Harvest |
"I had just gotten my first truck and broken up
with my first live-in girlfriend when I got Harvest on cassette. I played it
over and over again and it heavily influenced my first record. Neil is a
shaman I think. As was Marley."
|
 |
The Bad Plus
Give |
"They know what is up. They understand that the
trixter spirit is the spirit of creation. One minute the music is funny
and the next you get blown up. Like a great Vietnam book or a schoolyard
fight. Or reading the Tao Te Ching. This record is the jam."
|
 |
Nina Simone
The Blues |
"Nina feaks me out. So intimate and immediate
you feel like she is inside you last week, talking to you now."
|
 |
Paul Simon
The Rhythm of the Saints |
"With Graceland he pushed
songwriting and records to a new place. Then, he pushed himself and made
a record that feels like a great novel. I lived inside this record for a
while. 'Further to Fly' is such a good song. I have never heard another
song like it."
|
 |
Ron Sexsmith
Other Songs |
"This record always makes my cry.
Everytime. Even when I think it won't. The melodies actually hurt. It is really,
really beautiful."
