Brand New, Rilo Kiley, Doug E. Fresh and The Starting Line all rejected bids to play at Sundaze this year, said Sarah Foster, University Productions music director.
Foster said a bid is out on Talib Kweli.
“He may or may not accept,” she said. “We will find out after spring break. If he cannot perform, our next candidate is G. Love & Special Sauce.”
UP sent out the first bid in December. Bids are sent out one by one until a band accepts.
Foster said the UP usually doesn’t have an artist confirmed until four weeks before Sundaze.
“It is not a big deal at all that we do not have anyone confirmed to play at Sundaze this year,” Foster said.
UP is ahead of schedule and booking sound and security, Foster said.
“I am extremely pleased at the way things are going,” she said. “We are ahead of schedule for this time of year and are busy working on details for the day-long festival.”
Many acts could not come to Lehigh because the location or the date did not fit into their tour routes, Foster said.
“Since most artists already have set schedules for their spring tour, they cannot easily fit into a specific date,” Foster said.
Bands are not rejecting the bids based on the amount of money UP offers, Foster said. UP knows the prices of the different bands ahead of time so it only extends bids to bands it can afford.
UP will release the news about who is playing as soon as the bids are accepted and the contracts are negotiated, which should happen by the beginning of April, Foster said.
Foster said she expects this year’s Sundaze to be the biggest yet.
“We are planning on having inflatables, giveaways, booths sponsored by various student groups and even a hot dog eating contest,” Foster said.
Sundaze is an annual music festival that accompanies Greek Week. This year it is scheduled for April 22.
