| AP LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Shares of Res-Care Inc., a provider of job training and other services to patients with physical and mental disabilities, rose Friday in the first trading session after the company reported a 36 percent increase in second-quarter profit and raised its outlook for the year. Res-Care shares rose $1.05, or 5.5 percent, to $20.21 in morning trading on the Nasdaq. Shares have traded between $13.46 and $21.89 over the past 52 weeks. Late Thursday, the company said its quarterly net income grew to $8.4 million, or 30 cents per share, from $6.2 million, or 23 cents per share, a year ago. Results included preferred shareholder payments of $1.5 million for the latest quarter and $1.1 million for the year-ago quarter. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial expected earnings per share of 29 cents. Revenue rose 24 percent to $328.6 million from $265.7 million last year, as general and administrative expenses grew to $13.8 million, a 19 percent increase from a year ago. The company raised its per-share earnings guidance range for the year to $1.22 to $1.26, from a previous forecast of $1.20 to $1.24 per share. Analysts forecast earnings per share of $1.23.
