Carolyn takes top honours
WREXHAM Fencing Club made it a one, two, three at the Welsh Closed Foil competition at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, which acts as one of the events for Welsh fencers to be selected to the Senior Commonwealth Fencing competition later in the year.
In the women’s event top honours went to Wrexham’s Carolyn Benson, who beat clubmate Katherine McLeod in a closely fought final to take the gold medal.
Benson had moved to the final by defeating Lynne Melia in a return match having been defeated by Melia in the earlier poule match. McLeod saw off fellow Wrexham fencer, Lydia Johnson again in a closely fought match to leave Johnson taking a bronze medal. In the men’s event Stuart Wheeler took ninth place and Ben Roberts was 18th.
A group of young fencers from Wrexham have just returned from representing Wales in the sport’s junior equivalent of the rugby Six Nations.
The Junior Quads competition was taking place in Edinburgh with Wales taking on England, Scotland and Northern Ireland in both under 16 and under 18 age categories in all three of the disciplines – foil, epee and sabre.
In the under 16 section Wales finished in second place by just one hit, while they were third in the under 18 competition.
Representing their country for the first time were Sophie Whittingham, Victoria McLeod and Stephanie Collister, who is only 10, at epee; and Daniel Lumb at sabre.
Fencers from Wrexham were also competing in the Nottingham Open and although hit by the weather, there was a good turn out. Simon Hedges finshed in 39th in the foil, while Gareth Lawn was 19th in the sabre.
