Rakim To Headline Free Boston Hip-Hop Festival

Friday - August 4, 2006 by Janeé Bolden

Rakim

Rakim is among the classic acts performing at tomorrow's (August 5th) Peace Boston concert on City Hall Plaza.

The headliner for the event, Rakim will be joined by CL Smooth, Nice & Smooth and a number of local acts. L.A. based female MC Medusa and Boston's DJ Nomadik are hosting the event. This is the second year that the City of Boston and local hip-hop activists have organized the event, and with gun violence in the city on the rise this summer those behind the concert are hoping to nurture a more positive community outlook.

``It's we the people," Rakim told the Boston Globe. ``Conscious people have to do something. I mean, we've got Bloods and Crips in New York! That's ridiculous, that's 1979. But you know where they get it from? They get it from television, and from rap records. It's a deep situation. It's going to take brothers like me... our generation, to start change. Because it's senseless. We have to show them the right way."

Produced by the Mayor's Office of Arts, Tourism & Special Events and sponsored by Scion, The Peace Boston Hip-Hop Festival is free and open to the public at Boston City Hall Plaza tomorrow (8/5) from 4-8 p.m. For more information visit www.bostonhiphoproundtable.org or www.cityofboston.gov/art.

Always down to support a good cause, Rakim performed earlier this summer at Marc Ecko's Save the Rhinos Benefit, alongside Lupe Fiasco, Styles P, Common and Rhymefest. His next album The Seventh Seal is currently in the works.
