LA To Pay Dead Rapper's Family $1.1 Million

POSTED: 7:52 pm CST March 29, 2006
UPDATED: 7:15 am CST March 30, 2006

The family of murdered rapper Notorious BIG is getting $1.1 million from the city of Los Angeles for police negligence.

A federal judge ruled in January that a detective hid statements by a jailhouse informant linking BIG's killing to two ex-cops. The detective said the transcript was simply misplaced.

The documents were pertinent to the lawsuit by the rapper's family against the city regarding the Los Angeles killing. After imposing the sanctions on police, the judge declared a mistrial in the lawsuit, which may be retried.

The rapper's killing eight years ago remains unsolved. Officials say a new team of detectives is on the case.

The City Council approved the payment after city lawyers said a successful appeal of the judge's ruling was unlikely.
