The city council approved the payout yesterday after being told an appeal was unlikely to overturn District Judge Florence-Marie Cooper`s ruling.

She had sanctioned it after hearing that a detective withheld documents related to claims filed by the musician`s family against the city and the Los Angeles Police Department.
Notorious BIG, whose real name was Christopher Wallace, was shot and killed in March 1997 after the Soul Train Awards ceremony in LA. The murder has not been solved.

A retrial of the wrongful death case is expected later this year.

The money awarded to the family will cover their legal fees and other expenses incurred by their lawyers.
