Activities, local flavor keep ’em coming back to fair
Summary: Canyon County Fair provides diverse lineup of events
Longtime residents and Treasure Valley newcomers can join together and celebrate community fun for the next several days at the Canyon County Fair.
The event, which drew about 50,000 people last year, will feature popular staples along with some added attractions this year.
This year’s theme is “Corn to be Wild.” Held today through Sunday — with the Market Livestock Sale scheduled for Monday — the fair’s diverse lineup of events will include the Celebrity Cooking Shows and Taste of the Treasure Valley, which return after debuting a year ago.
Performing will be musical groups such as Little Big Town, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, as well as singers Billy Currington and Rodney Atkins.
Attendees also can check out the Junior Rodeo on Sunday in the Rodeo Arena, where the top 20 participants in some age groups and events will qualify to compete at the Caldwell Night Rodeo.
There will be numerous other activities as well, which is one reason the fair is always so popular. As such, this year organizers have tried to make getting to and from the event less hectic.
Free shuttle rides to the fairgrounds will run from 10:30 a.m. until the fair closes each day, from the rear parking lot of Karcher Mall, off Cassia Street, and the south parking lot of Albertson College of Idaho, off Indiana. Also, there will again be a free shuttle from the parking lot east of the fairgrounds off Griffiths Parkway.
If amped up entertainment and increased accessibility aren’t your bag, you can come for the food and libations. No fair is complete without an array of familiar treats such as hot dogs and cotton candy, and this year, for $5, adults will be able to sample up to three wines or one full glass and will receive a commemorative wine glass with their first purchase.
Of course, the Canyon County Fair is about more than food and festivities. The community atmosphere is a big part of what keeps us coming back for more — and why the event is sure to be a hit again.
