Dance revue based on Kurt & Courtney debuts

Dotmusic Thu Mar 29, 8:00 AM ET

A dance show based on Nirvana's landmark 1991 Nevermind album debuts in Seattle this weekend. The production opens at the Moore Theatre in the band's home city and will be performed by Seattle's Spectrum Dance Theater.

Speaking in the build-up to the first night, the show's choreographer compared the story of Kurt Cobain and

Courtney Love to that of "Romeo & Juliet."

Donald Byrd, who previously worked on the Broadway production of The Color Purple, called their relationship a "tragedy."

He explained: "The tragedy of his drug addiction that didn't allow him to see with the kind of clarity that would have made for different choices, I was just kind of drawn to that. It's like sometimes when you're watching Romeo & Juliet, you think, if they had just waited...even if it seems unbearable, it's going to change."

The production is not said to be autobiographical, although two dancers--David Alewine and Allison Keppel--"play" Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love.
