 on the verge: Bedroom Walls
The Los Angeles-based band Bedroom Walls has a sound so unique, they had to invent a new word to describe it: romanticore. Marrying singer-songwriter Adam Goldman's dreamy, bittersweet melodies and quirky lyrics to jangly, chamber pop arrangements with the odd bit of feedback, it's a sound that's built the Bedroom Walls a loyal following throughout Southern California and beyond.

Listen: In Anticipation of Your Suicide
Plus: an exclusive Bedroom Walls mixtape

  artist picks: Hem
Few modern bands imbue their music with as much sense of history as Hem. This collective of New York musicians plays so-called "Americana" on an epic, widescreen scale -- you can hear everything from Appalachian folk and Kentucky bluegrass to Gershwin-esque orchestral pop and Dylan/Guthrie folk-rock in their music, sometimes within the same song.

The members of Hem sent us the following list of albums with this note: "Somehow, if you could combine the following albums, the results would not be unlike the sonic world we have tried to fashion for ourselves in our albums." So from Glen Campbell to The Wizard of Oz, welcome to the world of Hem.
   Leonard Bernstein
Bernstein Century - Copland: Appalachian Spring & Other Works

"Aaron Copland practically invented the American musical myth. His melodies seem to be always reaching out towards something just beyond the horizon, where folk music and symphonic music meet."
   Motion Picture Soundtrack
Cinderella

"Sally’s favorite record as a child. Old Disney scores have been a constant source of inspiration for the band."
   Glen Campbell
Wichita Lineman
   Ray Charles
Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music

"These two albums are the apotheosis of the Countrypolitan genre for us; in both cases the singing, songwriting, arrangements, and production are thoughtful, beautiful and somehow a little surreal as well."
   The Carter Family
The Carter Family: 1927-1934

"Where would we be without the Carter Family? They showed us the power and beauty that is possible in a simple, redemption-seeky song."
   Ella Fitzgerald
Sings the George and Ira Gershwin Song Book

"The best singer performs the best songs ever written. What more could you want?"
   The Rolling Stones
Some Girls

"If you slow down a Rolling Stone’s guitar lick, you’ll find a Hem song (try it, you’ll see...)."
   Johnny Cash
At Folsom Prison

"'Don’t be afraid of the darkness,' was what Johnny Cash taught us. You can create beautiful songs that are not all saccharine."
   Laura Nyro
New York Tendaberry

"Laura Nyro created sprawling, kaleidoscopic songs that re-imagined New York City through her own very personal mythology. Just breathtaking."
   Motion Picture Soundtrack
The Wizard of Oz (Deluxe Edition)

"The quintessential American soundtrack. We aspire to the same Technicolor, cinematic vision in our albums."

Hem's latest album, Funnel Cloud, is available now in the ARTISTdirect Store, as are all of their picks. Click any of the album covers for more information.
