In two trips to Africa, the Australian singer and actor saw how devastating one of the world's worst pregnancy disabilities -- obstetric fistula -- can be for poor women.
After agonising days in labour without medical help, their organ tissue can be damaged, they can lose their babies and have chronic incontinence.
They are often ostracised by their husband, family and community.
"It just should not be happening, that women cannot safely have a child in this day and age," Imbruglia said.
"How can you not be compelled to want to draw attention to this? If you could help just one of these women, to me, it is giving that woman her life back."
Imbruglia, 31, is working with the UN Population Fund.
