The stars of the members of Morningwood might burn brightly for only a few albums when they realize that it’s hard work to have so much fun, but until they do, fans should jump on their surfboards and ride the joyous, bawdy, and altogether electric wave that is Morningwood.
On the New York City band’s self-titled full length-debut, the fact that this group makes one think immediately of the Pixies (unsurprisingly since both groups share producer Gil Norton) only amplifies the idea that they were able to translate their rough-hewn guitar licks into an electric sheen that oozes sexuality – the obvious example, well, the second most obvious example after the band’s name, is “Take Off Your Clothes,” in which singer Chantal Claret implores the necessity to follow the directions in the song’s title as soon as possible – without washing away the sound that grew their cult following.
Though many of the songs tend to follow the similar patterns, there is enough variety on tracks like “New York Girls” and “Televisor” that most fans will be willing to cut the group some slack and buy their sophomore album.
At some point, Morningwood is going to have to decide whether it can continue playing such explosive riffs without break. Until that point, music fans should enjoy the ride, because it is a fun one.
