 on the verge: Malajube
Canada has produced more than its fair share of terrific pop-rock bands, but Malajube stand apart. A Quebec band that sings almost entirely in Quebecois French, this lively quintet (guitarist/keyboardist Renaud Bastien joined after their latest round of publicity photos) makes melodic, garagey rock with a smidgen of post-punk noise and a soupçon of '70s glam theatrics. You might be tempted to sing along—even if you can't understand a word of it.

Listen: "Montreal -40 C"

  artist picks: Clinic
There are experimental bands, and then there's Clinic, a four-piece from Liverpool with a sound as hard to pin down as a blob of mercury. Since describing Clinic's music is next to impossible, we tried the next best thing: We got singer-guitarist Ade Blackburn to list some of his favorite and most influential albums. If you're looking for a road map through the wilds of deconstructed, psycedelic art-rock, this is it.
   Archie Bronson Outfit
Derdang Derdang

"ABO are now getting the recognition they deserve. Truly unique psych-blues, one of the best British bands in a long long time."
   Lucifer
Lucifer

"Maybe the best reissue of '06. Addictive Residents-style melodies played by a deranged pub rock band."
   Scott Walker
The Drift

"Absolute disregard for conventional structures and/or commercialism."
   Pat Kilroy
Light of Day

"Undiscovered acid folk that actually exceeds that category for weirdness."
   Tom Waits
Orphans

"Brawlers, bawlers and bastards."
   Vetiver
To Find Me Gone

"Inspired, sounds like pure enjoyment."
