Mel C puts some spice into county's recycling

Jul 12 2006

Sally Williams, Western Mail

SHE has graced the covers of the foremost fashion and music magazines in the world.

Whether for their music or their looks, the photographer's lens was never far away from the Spice Girls during their 1990s heyday.

Now former member Melanie C is appearing in perhaps her most bizarre cover shot - holding a bin on the cover of a Welsh community newspaper.

She has turned "Green Spice" to support a recycling scheme in the village where she lives.

The singer, who achieved global domination as Sporty Spice in the "girl power group, now lives in a quiet hamlet in rural Monmouthshire.

She was approached by organisers of Monmouthshire Community Recycling's "Black Box" scheme as the county's "most famous resident and recycler".

The star, who is regularly seen jogging near Tintern Abbey, gives her environmental message in Monmouthshire County Council's Community Spirit quarterly newsletter.

Melanie C said, "Recycling is so important for the future of our planet and I think we should all do our bit for the environment. It feels good to know that a little effort goes a long way. All we have to do in Monmouthshire is pop our cans, paper, glass and textiles into the black boxes provided."

A spokeswoman from her management team said Melanie C is a keen environmentalist.

She said, "Melanie C is hoping to get an electric car for her London apartment - but they would be no good in the hilly Welsh countryside.

"At the moment she would not be able to charge the car though, so she is asking for a charger to be installed in her local car park, so that she and her neighbours will be able to charge up their cars.

"She does a lots of environmental stuff but she doesn't like to make a big deal out of it."

Rachel Griffiths, editor of Community Spirit, said she was really proud to have Melanie C as a community cover girl.

She said, "In our newspaper, which is distributed quarterly to all 44,000 households, the star encourages everyone to 'do our bit for the environment'. We are very proud to feature Melanie C on the front cover and to have quoted her on recycling.

"As the county's most famous resident and recycler, she lives in a very picturesque and rural area.

"We feel that she is the prefect person to advertise our Black Box recycling scheme. We have known she was a resident for some time and we were thrilled when she agreed to promote our scheme and to be the face of it.

"

The photo was arranged by Dave Roman of Monmouthshire Community Recycling (MCR) who works in partnership with MCR to provide Black Box recycling.

Mr Roman said, "I have not actually spoken to Melanie C but I put two and two together on my rounds and realised I was speaking to her boyfriend one day, who was asking for a box.

"I think it's terrific that she is recycling; she didn't even ask for a fee, she just believes in what we are trying to do.

She is showing that she believes in what we are about; preventing landfill in Wales."
