Sussex Mop Up Kent Tail

Sat 15 Jul, 8:11 PM

Second-placed Sussex looked well in command when play broke for tea on the third day of their Liverpool Victoria County Championship Division One clash with Kent at Hove.

Richard Montgomerie was impressive with the bat, making amends for a first-ball duck in the first innings by striking 69 in a total of 167 for three to lead by 230 runs.

The hosts mopped up the Kent tail early on, as the visitors resumed on 295 for six but were all out for 336.

Pakistani bowler Yasir Arafat took his fourth and fifth wickets of the innings by removing James Tredwell and Niall O'Brien to finish with figures of five for 84.

Hampshire declared at 572 for three against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, with Jimmy Adams firing 262, featuring 34 fours and two sixes.

John Crawley had earlier managed 148 for Hampshire before he was caught by David Alleyne off the bowling of Mark Ealham. The hosts were 50 without loss in reply by tea.

England one-day call-up Tim Bresnan was Durham's chief tormentor as Yorkshire bowled them out for 258 at the Riverside.

Bresnan took five for 58 including the wicket of Durham skipper Dale Benkenstein, who fell seven short of a century.

Yorkshire built on their first-innings lead to reach 73 for no wicket in their second spell for an overall lead of 154, Joe Sayers unbeaten on 47.

Another man in the England frame, Ed Joyce, was hugely impressive for Middlesex.

He struck 211 against Warwickshire in a total of 446, with David Nash also contributing 68.

The Bears were unconvincing in reply as they stumbled to 109 for four, with only Mark Wagh (38no) making an impression.

In Division Two, Northamptonshire were off the pace set by leaders Surrey's first-innings 328 at Wantage Road.

They were 286 for nine, with Usman Afzaal unbeaten on 124, as the hosts trailed by 42 runs.

HD Ackerman racked up a triple century for Leicestershire as the Foxes amassed 560 against bottom side Glamorgan at Sophia Gardens.

The skipper hammered an unbeaten 309, with Paul Nixon having also added a half-century with 60.

Glamorgan were 31 without loss in reply at tea.

Some batting excellence from Andy Flower helped Essex comfortably eclipse Gloucestershire's first-innings 394 at Bristol.

The Zimbabwean hit 190, including 20 fours and a six, in a total which stood at 477 for seven by tea, with James Middlebrook securing a half-century on 52 not out.

England bowler Jon Lewis claimed two of the three Essex wickets to fall today, trapping both Flower's brother Grant and James Foster lbw.

Somerset were making hard work of trying to match Derbyshire's total of 396. The west country side were 225 for six at Taunton, Graeme Welch having claimed three wickets for the visitors.

Arul Suppiah (50) and Peter Trego (58no) both struck half-centuries for the hosts.
