'MC Lars' (formerly 'MC Lars Horris'), real name 'Andrew Nielsen', (born October 6, 1982 in Berkeley, CA) is a white male rapper from the United States. He is the self-proclaimed originator of "post-punk laptop rap". He has recorded for Truck Records in the UK and his Laptop EP is licenced to Sidecho Records in the USA. MC Lars' live shows can take on various forms - with an array of musicians joining him on stage depending on what is required for each song - but central to his act is his PowerBook laptop on which the musical accompaniments to his lyrics are stored. As with many other rap and Hip-Hop acts, samples play a key role in MC Lars' music, with the British band Supergrass amongst the numerous well-known groups he has sampled. Lars has also shown an interest in using lyrics and song titles based on English literature. Rapbeth's title parodies that of William Shakespeare's play Macbeth whilst Mr. Raven is inspired by Edgar Allen Poe. The term iGeneration, used to describe the generation born primarily in the mid-to-late 1980s, was coined by MC Lars in his song of the same name. Hearts That Hate Hearts That Hate, whose song "Cry Tonight" is sampled in Lars's "Signing Emo", is in fact a ficticious group created by the rapper. The Grammy-nominated Texan band Bowling for Soup have performed as Hearts That Hate when MC Lars has supported them on tour. A full version of "Cry Tonight" is available as a B-side to the UK "Signing Emo" single. The "MC Lars Show" on Sirius Satellite Radio MC Lars has a weekly radio show on Sirius Satellite Radio. It airs Tuesday nights at 10 PM EST (on channel 26 "Left of Center"), and features interviews and reports from the road. 27th Street While at Stanford, Lars drew a comic strip called 27th Street, for the Stanford Daily. Following his graduation, it became a webcomic, and is updated regulary on Lars's . Amphoteric In high school Lars was the co-founder of the Monterey Bay Area punk rock band Amphoteric. He would later leave, and the group would switch directions and gain a progressive metal following (especially amongst Internet listeners). Although the line-up has changed entirely, the group still resides in Central California and continues to release albums independently.
