Liars Information
Liars
'Liars' are an indie rock band from New York City. Formed around musicians Aaron Hemphill and Angus Andrew in late 2000, the group have released two albums: They Threw Us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top in October 2001 and They Were Wrong, So We Drowned in February 2004.
The group's first album revolved heavily around belligerent use of the bass guitar, and had gritty punk vocals to complement a nearly danceable drumbeat. The album was crucial in establishing the nascent subgenre of dance-punk.
The second Liars LP saw a significant change in the line-up of the band, leaving only the original founding members and replacements for those who had left. The resulting recording was a very loose concept album about the German tales of witch gatherings on the The Brocken (a mountain) during Walpurgis Night, and tales of witch trials in the area around the Harz Mountains. A greater focus on both noise and less coherent song structures resulted in strong opinions for and against the release.
The focus on The Brocken came when a band member accidentally searched the internet for "brocken witch" when researching the song "Broken Witch".
