Kutless softens its rough edges on new CD
By DANETTE KARLSEN, For Pulse
Through tattooed arms, pierced lips and screaming electric guitars, Kutless is back with its latest project, "Hearts of the Innocent."
The group took a break from its neo-grunge rock style with previous album "Strong Tower," then followed the ongoing trend in Christian music in producing worship music. While the mix put a little spice into worship, devoted Kutless fans will welcome back the sound that made the group's career skyrocket in 2002.
"Hearts of the Innocent" is a cross between Kutless' self-titled album and its follow-up project, "Sea of Faces." Those looking for a Christian band that rocks but can still show a soft side, look no further. Kutless offers energetic power ballads on its new disc, including the opening title track and the following song, "Shut Me Out." Kutless gets even heavier with tracks "Legacy" and "Million Dollar Man," both in sound and in content.
On the flip side, tunes don't get any softer than "Push Me Away" and "Beyond the Surface." These hard-core rockers even bring out the baby grand for a few tunes, including "Smile," "Promise of a Lifetime" and "Mistakes."
Kutless brings the popular rock sound of Nickelback and Hoobstabank to the Christian music industry without overpowering fans. The group has always offered much diversity and variety in its collections, and "Hearts of the Innocent" is no exception.
This album may not be the best Kutless has offered over the years, but it's still a breath of fresh air after a more laid-back year from the boys in the band. If you're looking for a hard sound matched with convicting powerful and moral lyrics, Kutless brings it.
