Much points to the new on Josh Rouse's latest: his own label after a near decade spent with Rykodisc; a change of scenery to Spain, leaving the U.S.A. behind; and finally, a slight movement away from his rootsy, country pop. Track 1 (Quiet Town) introduces us to Rouse's orchestral side, prevalent throughout here, immediately followed by a flamenco guitar-inspired number. After that a return to his past - a few acoustic ballads and a few straight-up rockers incorporating influences and sounds from his last few albums - from white-boy soul to the Nashville influence. Sadly missing are the unexpected hooks and highs that were givens on earlier material.
