AQUAMARINE ** 1/2
Heartfelt but a bit clunky, this mermaid-out-of-water story makes worthwhile viewing for ``tween'' girls. The focus in on two young Florida teens (Emma Roberts of Nickelodeon's ``Unfabulous'' and singer Joanna ``JoJo'' Levesque) who discover a mermaid in a swimming pool and agree to help her win the love of a hunky lifeguard. ASK THE DUST * 1/2
Filmmaker Robert Towne (``Chinatown'') struggled for 30 years to bring John Fante's novel about a young writer in Depression-era L.A. to the screen, and sadly it's a monumental bore. Colin Farrell plays the aspiring Italian-American author, and Salma Hayek is the Mexican waitress he falls for. But their love story feels typed more than lived, and Farrell's maundering narration is a poor substitute for plot. (B.N.) ATL ***
This visually sharp tale of friends growing up while roller-skating together to a hip-hop beat in Atlanta has wit and heart. Based on a story by Antwone Fisher, it also has a bangin' soundtrack (with a classic cut from OutKast), a kinetic energy in the skating scenes, and central themes of class and friendship that resonate like a pair of big bass speakers. The cast features rapper T.I., Jackie Long, Keith David, OutKast's Big Boi and Albert Daniels. (Chris Vogner, Dallas Morning News.) This guerrilla-style Beastie Boys concert documentary, captured on video by 50 untrained shooters (some from the audience) at an October 2004 Madison Square Garden show, will satisfy the band's groupies but not those who need an introduction to its blastin' style of New York rhyme, partly because many of the lyrics are unintelligible. Sharon Stone is back playing crime novelist Catherine Tramell, the embodiment of rapacious want and addiction to risk, now living in London. Her new playmate is that city's top criminal psychiatrist (David Morrissey, who lacks the sexual charge of Michael Douglas in the original). The film isn't merely so bad it's good; it's so bad-good that at times it's great. Stone's performance is so deliriously over-the-top that it turns almost every line she speaks into high camp. (B.N.) BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN ***
This drama about pair of young cowboys who fall in love under the Wyoming stars during the 1960s and, like most of the world around them, recoil from the very prospect of being gay is physically beautiful and emotionally truthful. Both men, Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger), are jolted by their feelings and never figure out what to make of them through 20 years of intermittent ``fishing trips'' together while married to, and raising children with, women they don't love. Ledger strips Ennis down emotionally until there is nothing left but hurt in a skillful performance that none of the actor's previous work would have led us to expect. (B.N.) CSA: THE CONFEDERATE
STATES OF AMERICA **
This mock British TV documentary gives us a look at the world as it might be if the South had won the Civil War and slavery had persisted to this day. Better yet, the documentary is placed in the context of an evening of Confederate network television, with breaks for commercials that add up to a ferocious satire on race in America. Despite the interesting premise, however, ``CSA'' is rough around the edges because of the limited budget and skills of inexperienced writer-director Kevin Willmott. CURIOUS GEORGE ***
H.A. Rey's gentle children's stories about an adventurous little monkey conveyed the dynamics of an idealized parent-child relationship, and happily this animated version remains true to the spirit of the stories. George's protector, the Man in the Yellow Hat, has a name now (Ted), a job (curator at a museum) and a voice (Will Ferrell's). Ted's main trophy from a trip to Africa is the friendly little monkey, George, whose high jinks in the big city complicate Ted's life but also help save the day for the museum he runs. Sam Shepard plays a burned-out Hollywood star who flees the set of his latest picture to embark on a rambling exploration of his past in this visually majestic but dramatically inert movie. Eva Marie Saint plays his mother, and Jessica Lange is his ex-lover and the mother of two children he didn't know he had. Matthew McConaughey plays a 35-year-old who still lives with his parents (Kathy Bates and Terry Bradshaw) and uses the shared household as a defense against letting the women he dates get too emotionally close to him. Finally, to force him out of the house, the parents hire an ``interventionist'' (Sarah Jessica Parker), who pretends to be the woman of his dreams. Ordinarily you might have trouble accepting the movie's premise that men are basically idiots, but McConaughey's performance is such a tour-de-force of doltish self-absorption that he makes it a difficult case to argue against. Going for squeamish laughter rather than white knuckles and cold sweat, this movie chronicles the grim reaper's harvest of seven Pennsylvania high school students who have escaped his clutches in an accident that killed other students at an amusement park. INSIDE MAN ***
Director Spike Lee and a mesmerizing trio of stars -- Denzel Washington, Clive Owen and Jodie Foster -- keep this crime-caper thriller whirling so stylishly that holes in the plot remain mostly out of sight. Owen is the leader of a team that invades Manhattan Trust, taking the customers hostage; Washington is an NYPD hostage negotiator; and Foster is a ruthless Manhattan power broker. Lee remains just as attuned here to the ways that people of different ethnicities affront each other as he was in ``Do the Right Thing'' and ``Bamboozled.'' (B.N.) JOYEUX NOEL * 1/2
This glossy French anti-war movie presents a polemic, sentimentalized version of an improvised Christmas truce that actually took place during the first year of World War I. But the lessons it hopes to extrapolate for today's world are simplistic, and the characters are more types than real people. (Stephen Holden, New York Times.) PG-13 (a scene of a couple in bed, some combat violence). 1 hour, 56 minutes. The 27-year-old protagonist (Casey Affleck) of director Steve Buscemi's deadpan comedy lives out the worst nightmare of every go-getter who moves to New York to be somebody and fails miserably. He returns home to Indiana, presented here as the world capital of boredom and despair, to work in his family's ladder factory in a film where all the characters save for the drug dealer are suffering from terminal lethargy. MADEA'S FAMILY REUNION ** 1/2
Tyler Perry (``Diary of a Mad Black Woman'') wrote, directed, scored and plays three characters in this new family soap opera, which is better and warmer than his first film. Part of the plot revolves around the nieces of black Atlanta matriarch Madea, one of whom (Rochelle Aytes) is engaged to a man who beats her, and another of whom (Lisa Arrindell Anderson) has turned to religion and celibacy after two bad relationships. Both look to Madea for guidance, even though she has problems of her own -- including a judge's ruling that she must share her home with a juvenile delinquent. The cast includes Lynne Whitfield and Blair Underwood. (Wesley Morris, Boston Globe.) MATCH POINT *** 1/2
With this film, Woody Allen leaves behind New York -- and the downward spiral of his career -- for England and a disarming, sophisticated, Hitchcockian drama set amid the upper classes. Jonathan Rhys Meyers plays a tennis pro who aspires to higher things in life. When, during a visit to the country house of a well-to-do student's family, he lays eyes on the young man's fiancee (Scarlett Johansson), it feels a little like that prescient moment when Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck meet in ``Double Indemnity.'' MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS *** 1/2
This story of a British widow who buys a theater and presents a musical revue for the soldiers heading off to World War II is inspired by true events, and it's one of the rare pictures that makes you feel as if the writer actually was inspired. As played by Judi Dench, Mrs. Henderson is a figure so much larger than life that she might have stepped from the pages of an Evelyn Waugh novel. (B.N.) THE NEW WORLD **
Director Terrence Malick's beautiful evocation of the unspoiled American Eden discovered by the first white settlers in 1607 is at odds with Colin Farrell's portrayal of Capt. John Smith as a classic bad boy that women say they don't want but really do. The whispery voice-overs by Farrell and newcomer Q'Orianka Kilcher as Pocahontas seem to belong in a slick perfume commercial, and the film has a pronounced lack of narrative flow. (B.N.) THE PINK PANTHER **
Steve Martin's performance as the bumbling Inspector Clouseau is comically sillier and physically looser than Peter Sellers' in the original series of Blake Edwards comedies. But the main difference is that the new film fails to surround Clouseau with worthy adversaries. The criminals are forgettable. His main foil is a police official played by Kevin Kline. More than 50 years after India's independence, college students far removed from the feeling of patriotism and the sacrifices it took to gain freedom open their eyes to social responsibility, and send a rousing message to India's youth. Illinois farmer John Peterson's curious life story becomes a tale of the American dream from both the dark and light sides in the hands of documentarian Taggart Siegel (who focused on this same farm in the 1983 documentary ``Bitter Harvest''). The story spans from the '60s, when Peterson tried to make the farm a hippie art commune, to the present day, when it's a bastion of community supported agriculture, producing lucrative organic crops. ROVING MARS **
This Imax film, underwritten by Lockheed Martin in collaboration with NASA, plays like a gigantic commercial for more space travel. There's some science that might prove interesting, particularly for the younger viewers who catch it on a school field trip. Amanda Bynes (TV's ``What I Like About You'') deftly wrings every conceivable laugh out of this present-day spin on Shakespeare's ``Twelfth Night,'' playing Viola, a prep-school soccer star before her school drops the girls' sports program. Bruce Willis plays an over-the-hill NYPD detective who must deliver a star witness in a corruption trial (Mos Def) to the courthouse, but gets ambushed by people determined to prevent the witness from testifying. This good-natured zombie comedy unleashes slimy slugs that stream down the throats of people who open wide to scream, as well as worms that burrow beneath the skin, both courtesy of a fallen meteor. They turn their victims (Michael Rooker and Brenda James, among them) into famished carnivores who decimate the pet and small-animal population of an odd little town. Writer-director James Gunn (``Dawn of the Dead'') keeps the blood and guts flying and the dialogue sharp while adding outrageous humor to the genre of the walking dead. (B.N.) Attractive twentysomethings Sophia Bush, Frankie Muniz, Jon Foster, Jimmi Simpson and Samaire Armstrong try out an unlicensed video game where the players meet the same fate in real life as their characters do on-screen. Despite a spooky New Orleans setting, director William Brent Bell fails to make the story truly frightening. (Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel.) SYRIANA **
This petroleum-based thriller -- set in the Mideast and starring George Clooney, Matt Damon, Jeffrey Wright and Chris Cooper -- requires your full attention at every moment, and even that is not enough. ``Syriana'' has great seriousness of purpose and fine acting, but writer-director Stephen Gaghan (the screenwriter for ``Crash'') presents its four main story lines so confusingly that it never comes together as a movie. A fender bender involving two men escalates into a dangerous game of enraged one-u anship in a taut variation on ``Changing Lanes,'' and the filmmakers do a stupendous job of shifting our sympathies between the leads. V FOR VENDETTA ***
Adapted by ``Matrix'' writer-directors Andy and Larry Wachowski from a graphic novel, this film chronicles a lone revolutionary terrorist's attempts to topple a fascist government in the United Kingdom of the future. It cleverly intertwines stories of how this terrorist, V (Hugo Weaving, wearing a mask), came to be what he is, and of how susceptible a democracy can be to a strongman whose lie is big enough. Natalie Portman plays the television employee who gets caught up in V's campaign, and John Hurt (``1984'') is the fire-breathing chancellor with feet of clay. (B.N.) WHY WE FIGHT ***
Eugene Jarecki's documentary, featuring Sen. John McCain, neo-conservatives William Kristol and Richard Perle and others, argues persuasively that high profits in the defense industry virtually guarantee that the United States will fight more wars. A literary editor offers $100,000 to the daughter (Zooey Deschanel) of a reclusive novelist (Ed Harris) if she will retrieve from him a collection of letters. But this drama about their uncomfortable reunion turns out to be a dull, extended encounter session among hackneyed characters. Will Ferrell and Amelia Warner play a couple who have moved into the novelist's home. (Desson Thomson, Washington Post.) THE WORLD'S FASTEST
INDIAN *** 1/2
Though well into his 60s, New Zealander Burt Munro (Anthony Hopkins) has a crazy dream: to travel halfway around the world and race his Indian motorcycle at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. Giving a fine performance in a feel-good movie, Hopkins turns on relentless charm to make obstacle after obstacle disappear for Munro. A labor of love for New Zealand director Roger Donaldson (``Thirteen Days''). (Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel.)
