"Kingdom" set to explode at box office

2 hours, 30 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Terrorism will triumph at the North American box office this weekend.

"The Kingdom," a new geopolitical thriller starring Jamie Foxx, Chris Cooper and Jennifer Garner, is set to replace "Resident Evil: Extinction" as the top choice for moviegoers, possibly hitting the low-$20 million range, industry analysts predict.

The timely feature revolves around a team of U.S. counterterrorism investigators who work with a local police officer to find the perpetrators of an attack on Americans in Riyadh. Peter Berg directed the Universal release, which received mixed reviews.

Also new is Disney's "The Game Plan," which hopes to score with families. The comedy stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as an NFL quarterback and carefree bachelor who finds out that he has an 8-year-old daughter from a previous relationship. Madison Pettis plays the previously unknown daughter who throws a wrench into Johnson's lifestyle playbook.

Early tracking indicates that "Game Plan" should land in the high teens for the weekend, but with the preteen bracket notoriously difficult to guess, that number could be higher.

MGM's "Feast of Love," a drama starring Morgan Freeman and Greg Kinnear, is expected to gross about $3 million.

Based on the novel by Charles Baxter, "Feast" revolves around a community of friends in Oregon. Radha Mitchell, Selma Blair, Fred Ward and Jane Alexander also star. Robert Benton directed.
