A Brand New BagBy Jerome SpencerTuesday, May. 23, 2006 A BRAND NEW BAG: I don’t have any interesting facts to share with you or any tidbits of inspiration to motivate you to get your ass out there and have a good time this week. Except this: Blues Traveler, Flogging Molly, Guns ‘N Roses and James Brown! Read on. Probably the most successful "jam band" as far as charts are concerned, Blues Traveler have been touring consistently and put on an incredible live show. Their rhythmic, bright yet gritty style has made them one of the most celebrated bands in recent history. After going through some changes, Blues Traveler are back on the road and you’d be stupid to miss them. These guys did the Roseanne theme song, man! Catch these legends at the NorVa on Tuesday, May 23 at 8 p.m. They will be joined by the equally celebrated Yonder Mountain String Band, and it will only cost you 25 dollars. Legends of a different scene entirely, Flogging Molly hit the NorVa on Thursday, May 25. Combining punk rock with Irish folk music and a lot of attitude, Flogging Molly have been a staple in the open-minded music community for nearly a decade. You can catch their notoriously lively and rambunctious live show at 8 p.m. when they will be joined by the Riverboat Gamblers and ASG. For only $22.50, you can have yourself a Guinness, too. James Brown! The Godfather of Soul and hands-down one of the coolest cats alive and kicking, James Brown is coming to our town. Jump back! James Brown is one of the most important and influential musicians ever, and you can catch him live and in person at nTelos Pavilion this Friday, May 26. Lawn tickets are only 20 bucks — I recommend the lawn so you have room to get down — and this show starts at 7:30 p.m. Guns ‘N Roses are pretty damn influential themselves. Influential enough to spawn a slew of tribute bands. One of those tribute bands happens to be Appetite For Destruction. Appetite For Destruction happens to be at the NorVa this Saturday, May 27. Let’s face it, Velvet Revolver sucks and Axl will never tour again because he’s crazy, so just go have a good time with a band who loves the good old days as much as you do. Showtime is 8 p.m and tickets are only 15 dollars at the door. They may not be legends or influential yet, but Dubconscious are well on their way to becoming one of the biggest names in the patchouli smelling crowd. Combining afrobeat and dub with a traditional reggae sound, these guys will bring raw energy and positive vibes to the Jewish Mother on Sunday, May 28. This show begins at 9PM and tickets are only 10 bucks. Come on, you don’t need me to convince you to get off the couch this week. This is a great week for shows and it only gets better as the weather does. See you out there.
