Listen Up!

Fiona Apple

Controversy has worked wonders for Fiona Apple's career. Take the video for her first single, Criminal, a steamy clip that detractors called pornographic and fans called incredible. Whichever -- it got her in the news, and she's never really been out of it. Since then, the native New Yorker has made headlines for a 90-word album title, a profanity-laced acceptance speech at an awards show, and, most recently, a fist-fight with her record label that she almost lost. Apple's latest record, Extraordinary Machine, came thisclose to not coming out, but the Grammys embraced its eclectic mix of baroque-style pop, honoring it with a nomination for best pop vocal album and giving this show another boost of buzz. Oh, yeah, Coldplay will be there, too -- Apple's the opening act. 8 p.m. Sunday. American Airlines Center, Dallas. $36-$76. Metro (972) 647-5700.

Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys

Ever since banjo picker and tenor Ralph Stanley gained some mainstream notoriety for his contributions to the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, he has been a regular road-hound, performing more shows than musicians half his age and, finally, after living in near-obscurity for decades, gaining the type of recognition the bluegrass icon deserves. It's one thing to live your life on the road, but Stanley, who was born in 1927 in Virginia, has been a mainstay in the studio, too, consistently releasing records since the 1940s. He has never veered far from what he does best -- mingling gospel with bluegrass, traditional folk and country music -- but what he lacks in versatility, he more than makes up for with dedication, passion and virtuosity. 8 p.m. Friday. Granada Theater, 2534 Greenville Ave., Dallas. $25-$30. (214) 824-9933 or www.granadatheater.com.

The Click Five

Boston's Click Five is one of several relatively new rock bands (they're about 3 years old) that seem bummed out that they weren't around decades ago. They're part of a circuit of '60s pop-rock/'80s New Wave revivalists, bands preoccupied with the past as obsessively as some of you are with JFK assassination theories. Their pair of records aren't good or bad -- just sort of OK and just sort of the stuff you'd expect: Beach Boys harmonies topped with zany, New Wave keyboard splashes; they wear nice suits, too, of course, another homage to well-tailored groups of the '60s; they just weren't made for these times. 7 p.m. Friday. Ridglea Theater. $16. (888) 512-SHOW.
