"Sex and the City" and "American Idol" Stars Join MCC's Miscast Benefit Lineup

By Ernio Hernandez
02 Mar 2006

Stage and television stars Mario Cantone and Diana Degarmo as well as Broadway belter Eden Espinosa join Ana Gasteyer, Deborah Gibson, Michael Cerveris, Brian d'Arcy James and more for the upcoming MCC Theatre's Miscast benefit.

Phil Reno (The Drowsy Chaperone) will serve as musical director for the benefit evening slated for March 13 at the Hammerstein Ballroom.

Miscast features Broadway performers singing popular Broadway showtunes — but the catch is for roles in which they would never be cast. This year's celebs currently include Assassins co-stars Mario Cantone (Laugh Whore) and Michael Cerveris (Sweeney Todd), "American Idol" diva Diana Degarmo (Hairspray), Eden Espinosa (Wicked, Brooklyn), Ana Gasteyer ( The Threepenny Opera), Deborah Gibson (Cabaret), Brian d'Arcy James (The Sweet Smell of Success) and Matthew Morrison (Hairspray). More stars to be announced.

Last year's audience enjoyed Hairspray's Bruce Vilanch belting a woeful "tits and ass" in A Chorus Line's "Dance Ten Looks Three," Michael Cerveris (Assassins) and Tom Wopat (Annie Get Your Gun) harmonizing the Oklahoma! ballad "People Will Say We’re in Love" while Gavin Creel (...Millie), Paul Castree (All Shook Up) and Jose Llana (...Spelling Bee) became the soul-sister trio of Dreamgirls.

Past performances have included Wicked's Kristin Chenoweth offering "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" from Dreamgirls, Rent's feisty Daphne Rubin Vega singing "Climb Every Mountain" from The Sound of Music, Amy Spanger bellowing "Old Man River" from Showboat, and Mamma Mia star Louise Pitre performing "The Impossible Dream" from Man of La Mancha.

The evening, which will honor producer Carole Shorenstein Hays, is supported in part by Kenneth Cole New York. Proceeds from the benefit go towards MCC's programs.

Miscast begins with 6:30 PM cocktails and a 7:30 PM welcome, dinner and award presentation followed by dessert and a 9 PM performance. Tickets range from $350-$2,500. Tables of 10 are available for $7,500 (silver), $12,000 (gold) and $20,000 (platinum). Reservations can be made by calling (212) 727-7722 (ext. 233).
