Devendra Banhart Announces European Tour
The good thing about reporting Devendra Banhart news is that it does not matter if we refer to him as Devendra or Banhart. In fact, it might even be easier to simply use Devendra because we don't know any other Devendras and neither do you.*In the meantime, the man responsible for last year's Rejoicing in the Hands has a busy summer ahead of him. He'll be in Europe, playing festivals like everybody else. He'll also be headlining a bunch of his own shows on that continent. At Roskilde, he'll do a set with everyone's favorite harpist: Joanna Newsom.
As previously reported, Banhart has finished recording his next album, which is expected to be released later this year. Also in the works is the new Vetiver album. Speaking of Vetiver, Banhart is a member of said group and will join them on a tour of Europe before he launches his own tour. The Vetiver tour will be comprised of Banhart, Andy Cabic, Alissa Anderson, Kevin Barker, and Otto Hauser.
* If you do know any other Devendras, and can prove it, please let us know. If you are named Devendra, and can prove it, that's even better. You don't count, Banhart.

# collaboration set with Joanna Newsom
While details on the LP are obviously still coming together, a few collaborations are said to be in contention for the final tracklist, including "Where I Come" (featuring Mos Def and Talib Kweli), and "Workin' on It" (with Mos Def). Some of the new tracks may also be featured on the band's upcoming U.S. tour, which kicks off this week in Bridgeport, Conn. When asked about what tracks fans can expect on the trek, ?uestlove replied, "We'll just play what comes to mind." Pretenders Video Collection to Hit DVD
You gotta admire Chrissie Hynde's endurance. The original punk-pop starlet broke both musical and sexual boundaries with the Pretenders debut album, became one of MTV's early video heroes, and even gave the punk kids their very own Grace Kelly/Prince Rainier pairing by romancing the Kinks' Ray Davies-- not bad for a girl from Akron, Ohio! And while Hynde and co. have yet to announce a follow-up album to 2002's overlooked Loose Screw, the Pretenders are capitalizing on their recent induction into the Rock Hall of Fame with a new DVD collection set to hit stores this summer.Rhino has announced a June 7 release date for The Pretenders Greatest Hits, an upcoming DVD set that will package the most popular music videos from the outfit's 25-year career. The disc offers remastered 5.1 Surround Sound, and includes such 80s classics as "Brass in Pocket" and "Back on the Chain Gang", as well as more recent efforts like "Popstar" and Human". The collection also includes the 45-minute band documentary No Turn Left Unstoned, which covers the band's messy history, and features testimonials from Bono, Mark Mothersbaugh, Elvis Costello, Lemmy, and one-time New York Doll/Buster Poindexter David Johansen. Hot hot hot!!!

Concretes to Release B-Sides Comp
One of the nicest surprises of 2004 was the appearance of the self-titled album by Swedish pop urchins the Concretes, who won hearts across the board with their beautiful mix of 60s girl-group sizzle and sedative cool. The Concretes' appeal was addictive and the album ended up being both a critic and fan favorite. As the band's website claims, needless to say the band has come a long way since it was unfairly labeled "like the Cardigans, but with a ton less talent." And now while "Say Something New" continues to slowly seep into North America's collective consciousness through its use in Target ads, Astralwerks is planning to capitalize on the band's upward momentum by issuing a U.S. exclusive compliation of B-sides and rarities called Layourbattleaxedown on July 26.The Stockholm-based group has a deeper history than one would expect and have released a bunch of hard-to-find EPs and singles on various labels since 1995, including their own Licking Fingers label and an EP collection on Up Records. Apart from the flipsides taken from the "You Can't Hurry Love", "Warm Night", and "Say Something New" singles, the 11-song album will contain recordings originally found on their rare 2001 Nationalgeographic EP but lost until recently, including a cover of the Stones' ass-shaker "Miss You". The full tracklisting is:
01 Forces
02 Sugar
03 Lady December
04 The Warrior
05 Miss You
06 Oh Baby
07 Sand
08 Free Ride
09 Branches
10 Under Your Leaves
11 Seems Fine Shuffle
Who's in that band of his, you ask? None other than Fugazi's versatile drummer Brendan Canty, plus Sugar bandmate David Barbe, Garland of Hours' Amy Domingues, and Matt Hammon, a member of Bob Mould's band circa 1998. The album will include 12 tracks (some of them more acoustic and/or electronic in nature), and it was recorded in four states over the past year or so by Don Zientara, Barbe, Frank Marchand, and Mould himself. Billboard has the tracklist, and the tracklist goes like this:
01 Circles
02 (Shine Your) Light Love Hope
03 Paralyzed
04 I Am Vision, I Am Sound
05 Underneath Days
06 Always Tomorrow
07 Days of Rain
08 Best Thing
09 High Fidelity
10 Missing You
11 Gauze of Friendship
12 Beating Heart the Prize
Possibly even more promising is the prospect of a Mould world tour, especially, as Yep Roc points out, if it "will see Mould performing material from all stages of his career-- solo, Sugar, Hüsker Dü-- for the first time in a full band context." Canty has already signed on as drummer for the tour, which will start in the fall. If they play "Pride", no, anything off Zen Arcade, then the Pixies will be out of business. Dates should be announced fairly soon, and hey, Bob has his own blog, so he'll probably mention it there too.

Bright Eyes' Digital Tour Launches Tonight
Remember that acoustic Wide Awake tour Bright Eyes put on earlier this year? Or maybe you caught Conor and co. open up for R.E.M.? Well, that was all a warm up. The Saddle Creek one-two punch, better known as Bright Eyes and the Faint (sorry, Cursive), are ready to sock your sorry ass back to the analog age, as today sees the pair of bands begin their nearly three-month tour pumping out those hits from Digital Ash in a Digital Urn. As previously reported, the Faint will open for Bright Eyes, and then transform into Oberst's backing band during the Bright Eyes set, which we'd compare to Beck and the Flaming Lips if it didn't make us feel so dirty. The tour winds its way from Midwest to West, back to Midwest, to the East, down South, and then back West, and just recently the bands added a few more dates in Georgia, Texas, and Oklahoma. Follow?Plus, they've started to add European dates. The two bands will make appearances in Germany and Switzerland, including three festivals, plus Bright Eyes will make a Faint-less detour at the T in the Park Festival alongside Sons & Daughters and Interpol. The whole thing will end on July 16, by which point we'll be willing to put this Urn to rest. Bad joke? Dates:

TV on the Radio Recording, Play Benefit Show
Last year must have been exhausting for TV on the Radio. They released their excellent full-length Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes, won various music-related awards including the Shortlist Music Prize, and added new members. Then there was a full European tour, and a tour here in the U.S. with the Faint, which is super taxing in itself. Because, you know, the Faint like to party. However, it hasn't slowed them down-- according to Touch & Go Records, TV on the Radio are hunkered down in the studio, fully immersed in recording the follow up to their smashing debut. How immersed? Well, we're not sure...they haven't provided any album details, but did say the following about their new material: "The songs are quite delicious...we will crash into the sun." So there's that. There's also no release date, nor a title, though Desperate Teens, Blood Thirsty Youth could work, if it wasn't such a bad joke.
Fans lucky enough to live in Brooklyn might get a taste of the new record at TV on the Radio's appearance tonight at REZONE THIS!, a show-slash-dance party to raise awareness of the city's plans to rezone Williamsburg and Greenpoint, thus making it harder for you to live there, trust fund or no:
04-28 Brooklyn, NY - Club Exit (with Apollo Heights, Dragons of Zynth, Roxy Pain, and tha Pumpstar)
The Darkness' Hawkins Preps Solo Album
The Darkness are currently in the studio finishing their sophomore effort, but NME.com is reporting that lead singer Justin Hawkins is also in the midst of his debut solo record. The LP, British Wail, should be released a couple months after the Darkness release their own album in the fall. As of now, no date has been confirmed for either release.Hawkins told reputable British paper The Sun, ahem, that the record "is a lot less rock than the band stuff. There's a lot more synths. I suppose you could call it luxurious rock. I'd written most of it in demo form before the Darkness took off but I've only finished it properly recently."
Apparently, Hawkins recorded his songs while on breaks from recording the new Darkness album and it was completed at home in his own studio in London. He plans to tour in support of the work, saying, "I guess Dan [his brother and Darkness guitarist] will have to be the guitarist. He likes the stuff. But it will be completely different from what people would expect."
He also told The Sun that the first single will be "This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both of Us", a Sparks cover.
Meanwhile, Roy Thomas Baker is producing the Darkness album. Baker is known for his work on Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", in addition to producing records by Foreigner, the Cars, and Devo. The Darkness' offical site reports that an original list of 39 songs has been reduced to 15. Hawkins says that the drum sound is "perhaps the largest ever heard in rock."
Awesome.
DJ Shadow Readies Entroducing Reissue
Even if you're a fan, we have to say that buying something twice is a pretty stupid idea-- even if it's a limited/special/ultimate/collector's edition with a new commentary or B-side or whatever is totally fucking insane. That said, DJ Shadow's Endtroducing... will be released again on June 7 with bonuses and extras and maybe some nice new packaging, and I'm going to buy it-- and so should you. Because it's one of the best albums of the 90s. And because I'm an idiot.According to a recent report in Billboard, Shadow's classic 1996 LP will be re-released via Island, and will include a disc-full of extra goodies-- live songs, single edits, demos, and remixes. Shadow kept his fingerprints all over this one, overseeing the whole procedure and contributing new pictures and liner notes (which will include excerpts from Eliot Wilder's upcoming book about the album.)
Other than revisiting his older material, Shadow has kept somewhat busy, while still working on an as-yet-untitled album that is, according to his official website, tentatively planned for the end of 2005. In February, the 10" for Keane's "We Might As Well Be Strangers" featured a Shadow remix, while he also produced "Over You", a track off of Lyrics Born's new LP, Same Shit, Different Day.

Hopewell to Release Album, Tour
The trouble with moonlighting is the unavoidable reality of foresaking the perks and grudgingly returning to your day job. Fortunately for Jason Russo, bounding around as a touring member of Mercury Rev during their See You on the Other Side and Deserter's Songs periods hasn't dampened his spirit in regard to his own band Hopewell-- his "day job" for the past 12 years. Excusing these past touring distractions mentioned above, Hopewell's press inform Pitchfork that the band will finally be releasing their third album proper on June 28 entitled Hopewell and the Birds of Appetite on Tee Pee Records, home of labelmates-cum-docudrama stars the Brian Jonestown Massacre. After heavy praise for their last album The Curved Glass, the band hope to build on the Hopewell formula of buoyant bursts of psychedelic wall-of-noise sound that they have been honing since the beginning, by adding more classic songwriting and eclectic instrumentation and seeking production from old cohort Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, the Delgados, Sleater-Kinney) and Bill Racine (Rogue Wave, Phantom Planet). The album was completed at the Fridmann/Racine-associated Tarbox Road Studio and the tracklisting is as follows:
01 Trumpet for a Lung
02 Calcutta
03 Praise Twice
04 Sugar in the Honey
05 Synthetic Symphony
06 The Birds of Appetite
07 The Notbirds
08 Hello Radio
09 Kings and Queens
10 4 A.M.
11 God is Near (A Diamond Structure)
12 Square Peg Teeth
And while former Rev bandmates Donohue, Mercel and Grasshopper get on with their business of playing North America and the festival circuit in Europe to promote their latest release The Secret Migration, Hopewell will do the same, embarking on a handful of North American shows with hotly-tipped band the Comas. There will be an album release party on June 25 in New York. Dates include:
05-19 Nashville, TN - The End #
05-20 Atlanta, GA - The Earl #
05-21 Carrboro, NC - Cat's Cradle #
05-22 Arlington, VA - Iota Club & Cafe #
05-24 Brooklyn, NY - Southpaw #
06-11 Toronto, Ontario - NXNE Festival
06-18 New York, NY - The Mercury Lounge (record release show)
