August 30: Black-Eyed Peas
Who: The Peas came together in the mid-1990s to challenge the dominance of West Coast gangsta rap and its sordid tales of pimps, drugs and drive-by shootings, hoping to fill the void left by A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul, soulful hip-hop acts with a positive message. But the group achieved massive recognition only after Stacy ''Fergie'' Ferguson joined the group and 2003's pop-flavored ''Elephunk'' was released. The Peas fill arenas around the world, but some critics contend they are too pop, and that the song ''My Humps,'' about women's breasts, is detestable.
