African champions Morocco outpaced the rugby Cranes 36-3 during their first qualification test for the 2007 IRB World Cup in Casablanca, Morocco over the weekend but former national captain Herbert Wafula is optimistic the national team will turn tables on the North Africans.
"We still have a chance because the scores margin is minimal. The Moroccans will also find the going tough on our home turf," said the current country manager.
"The team travelled and played without a few inspirational players like Timothy Mudoola, Simon Wakabi and Bobby Bibagamba who could have provided the coach more options."
Morocco, which fielded a professional outfit led the first half 36-3 managing 6 tries and 2 conversions compared to Uganda's single penalty but the Cranes regained their composure in the second half to deny the skilled Moroccans.
It was Uganda's first appearance at that rugby stage in a match, which also served as the first qualifying round of the Africa Cup.
The Confederation of African Rugby (CAR) divided the fixtures of the 2006 Africa Cup into four three-team groups, with Morocco, Côte d'Ivoire and Uganda in the first pool.
Games involving Group A and Group B count as qualifiers for the 2007 Rugby World Cup, to be held in France, with the matches being played on a home and away basis.
Uganda will host Morocco on September 2 in the return fixture of the weekend's leg.
