Police guitarist brings memoir to big screen

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Police guitarist Andy Summers is turning his autobiography "One Train Later" into a feature documentary, which will boast 25,000 photos from his collection as well as footage from the band's reunion tour.

Lauren Lazin ("Tupac: Resurrection") is in negotiations to direct the picture, which counts Nicolas Cage among its producers. Summers is in talks to narrate.

The band's June 23 concert at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles was filmed with several helicopters, and shooting will continue over three continents until the tour wraps in the spring.

The film will trace Summers' life from his youth in post-World War II England to his time playing with the Animals and 1960s psychedelic bands to the Police's formation and current reunion.

It will be similar in style to the Robert Evans documentary "The Kid Stays in the Picture," which used animated sequences to recount the life of the Hollywood producer. That film was directed by Brett Morgen, who is also on board the Summers film as a producer.

Morgen said he hoped to have the film ready in time for the Sundance Film Festival in early 2009. It will be released by Yari Film Group.
