Columbia City's Benedict to coach Indiana All-Star boys

INDIANAPOLIS -- Chris Benedict, the boys basketball coach at Columbia City High School, has been named the coach of the Indiana boys All-Stars for the annual series with Kentucky, The Indianapolis Star has announced.

Steve Bennett of New Castle and Steve Brett of Loogootee will be assistants for the games that will be played June 17 at Bowling Green, Ky., and June 24 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, the Star, the Indiana sponsor of the series, announced Sunday.

Benedict, 38, has compiled a 157-73 record in 10 seasons with the Eagles, including a Class 4A state runner-up finish in 2004.

"Every kid represents their community, but when you put 'Indiana' on the jersey, you're representing the state. It puts chills down your spine," he said.

Bennett, 52, has a 151-55 record in nine seasons at New Castle. He also was an assistant for 12 years at the University of Evansville for teams that posted a 217-112 record.

Brett, 56, is a 1967 Loogootee graduate who returned to his alma mater to succeed Jack Butcher, the state's all-time winning coach. Brett has a 75-25 mark in four seasons with the Lions, including a Class A state runner-up finish last season.
