The fate of the state-title winning gymnastics program at Cañon City High School will be discussed tonight before the district’s school board, and the future of the program could be in jeopardy.
Superintendent Robin Gooldy said Monday morning that several factors have contributed to discussions about eliminating the gymnastics program, including the loss of former coach Nikki Teigen.
Teigen stepped down from the program after last season to spend more time with her children, but Gooldy said the search to find a suitable replacement is coming up empty.
The retirement of Teigen, owner of Cañon Academy of Gymnastics, also leaves question regarding practice facilities and cost per student.
“We have a verbal agreement for the use of a facility at a lower cost than this year,” Gooldy wrote in an e-mail.
Gooldy also said participation in the program also is a question, and at least nine participants will be re-quired to keep the program afloat.
The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. in the administration building at 101 N. 14th St.
