I bought a 95 Cirrus in Oct 2003 - it had 119000 miles at the time. Except for some minor repairs here and there, the car ran fine - at least until about a month ago. Like happened to the other people posting to this blog the car would suddenly loose ignition. At first it would only happen while idle, but eventually it began to happen while the car was in motion as well. Sometimes I would be able to start it right back up, but sometimes I would have to wait a good 5 min before it would start again.
I brought it to my local mechanic and he had no clue - he said that there were no codes on the computer and he didn't see anything physically wrong. He didn't charge me anything for looking at it and suggested I bring it to the dealership. I brought it to Chrysler Service and paid them $100 to tell me that they thought I had contaminated fuel.
After about six bottles of fuel treatment and two bottles of fuel system cleaner the problem actually began to get worse. I finally gave up on it when I stalled out while moving around a sharp corner and ended up facing the wrong way in the exit of a gated government lab and the car absolutely refused to start up again - even after an hour (at least the security guard helped me push it out of the way).
I had it towed to the local mechanic again and he tried replacing the crank shaft sensor, but the problem is still there. I just bought a 2004 Hyundai Elantra today and will send the Cirrus to car heaven tomorrow morning.
My advice to anyone else owning a Cirrus is to dump it for whatever you can as soon as these mystery problems begin to start. The car is so awkwardly engineered that it's extremely difficult (and expensive) to work on.
