Thai Coup Idles Cage

Bangkok, dangerous? Apparently so when it comes to Nicolas Cage and his latest starring vehicle, a remake of the high-octane Hong Kong action flick Bangkok Dangerous.

The star had been shooting the gangster action thiller Time to Kill, an update of a 1999 film by twin brothers filmmakers Danny Pang and Oxide Pang Chun, this week when a coup by the Thai military Tuesday overthrew the prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra.

While the military action was peaceful, it nonetheless forced production on the film to shut down, according to the Chinese news site Sina.com. The site says that once the 42-year-old Cage got wind of the rebellion--which featured tanks and soldiers roaming the streets of the capital--he immediately returned to his hotel and made arrangements to have a private jet at the ready in case the political situation rapidly deteriorated. The film's crew, meanwhile, stayed to watch over the set (including a cache of prop guns) until Cage and the Pang brothers (who are overseeing the remake) urged the crew to go home.

By Friday, with Thaksin stranded in London, life returned to normal in Bangkok, whose streets were once again bustling with traffic after the coup leaders' announcement that a new prime minister would be chosen within two weeks.

However, there was no immediate word on when production would resume on Time to Kill, in which Cage plays a hit man on the prowl. Cage's publicist could not be reached for comment.

The Oscar winner was most recently seen in a pair of summer releases, the 9/11-themed World Trade Center and a remake of the British cult horror flick The Wicker Man.

Aside from Time to Kill, Cage has two other films in the can for 2007: Next, a sci-fi flick costarring Julianne Moore about a man who can see future events who is wanted by the government to thwart terrorists; and Ghost Rider, a Marvel Comic adaptation about a motorcycle-mounted vigilante literally hell-bent on revenge.

Once Cage wraps in Thailand, he's scheduled to begin work on National Treasure 2, a sequel to his 2004 box-office hit.
