CD Review: Decyfer Down — End of Grey

End of Grey is the debut album from Christian Rock band Decyfer Down. The group consists of vocalist and bassist Caleb Oliver, guitarist Brandon Mills, guitarist and vocalist Chris Clonts and drummer Josh Oliver.

Decyfer Down has already built a solid fan base on the strength of their live show. The band has already had the opportunity to share the stage with such acts as Breaking Benjamin, Crossfade, and Puddle of Mudd at various festivals.

Produced by Jim Cooper and Tony Palacio, End of Grey is a melodic and hard hitting piece of work. The songs, backed by ringing guitar riffs are filled with lyrics about searching, waiting, honesty and hope. The opening track, “Break Free” is a fast paced song that shows off the bands exceptional guitar riffs from the first note. “Burn Back the Sun” is a very good power ballad off the album. Though it has a stronger guitar base, it is reminiscent of Creed’s “With Arms Wide Open.”

Vocally, Caleb’s voice sounds like a mix of Papa Roach and Scott Stapp. Lyrically, while the group aims for Christian based message, if that is not your forte, the songs can be listened to as good rock tracks. The song “I’ll Breathe for You” from End of Grey has been getting airplay at modern Rock radio stations in the group’s hometown region of North Carolina. If you’re looking for hard driving rock with a message, or are still hoping for another Creed album, give End of Grey a try.
