Boy Sets Fire's outspoken nature has been known to light a fire under politicians and religious groups that take exception to the hard-core punk band's politically provocative lyrics and liner notes.

But as the All Music Guide says, "For those into politically driven, emotional hard-core punk, Boy Sets Fire is arguably one of the best."

The band's newest album, "The Misery Index: Notes From the Plague Years," which was released in March, shows just how skilled the group is at sonic diversity. Some songs land squarely in the hard-core corner with screaming vocals and aggressive music, while others feature strumming guitars and melodic vocal harmonies.

The new album touches on the band's typical topics — war, religion, government, freedom — but it also throws in a career retrospective and a lonely-hearts song.

Boy Sets Fire will light up the stage Saturday at Skrappy's, 201 E. Broadway. The Fully Down and Tucson's Versus the Mirror will open the show at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12 though Ticketmaster, www.ticketmaster.com or 321-1000.
