Bad Religion's Graffin Molds 'Clay'

Bad Religion's Graffin Molds 'Clay'
May 10, 2006
Story by: Matt Pullman

Bad Religion frontman Greg Graffin is set to release his solo joint July 11 via Anti-/Epitaph. Cold As The Clay honors his favorite influences from the folk world and shows a side of the punk icon that fans have never seen before. Fellow Bad Religion bandmate and Epitaph leader Brett Gurewitz produced the album—in a mere seven days, nonetheless.

Cold is described in a press release from the label as a "vivid, hi-fi recording that makes you feel as if you are in a 19th century pine-floored cabin or village-church with the musicians right there next to you." The album was born from Graffin's "love of country rock in the vein of Gram Parsons, the Band and Neil Young." Graffin enlisted Canadian punk storytellers the Weakerthans as his backing band and singer-songstress Jolie Holland also appears, lending some backing vocals. Traditional songs such as "Omie Wise" and "Talk About Suffering" are covered, along with three brand new songs such as "Don't Be Afraid To Run," "The Watchmaker's Dial" and the title track. "I wanted to show how my work with Bad Religion was informed by other, seemingly disparate and unconventional genres of music that at first glance my appear to have nothing to do with punk," Graffin states. "My hope is that this project will live to pass along the tradition of American songwriting to others long after I am buried and cold as the clay."
