Here's the 4-1-1 on the rest of the Up Close &
Personal entourage:
Ne-Yo
Taking his stage name from the main character in the
"Matrix" films, Las Vegas singer-songwriter
Shaffer Chimere Smith previously penned tunes for Mario,
B2K, Mary J. Blige and others. Ne-Yo, 23, has been notching
R&B hits of his own lately, including "So
Sick," "When You're Mad" and "Sexy
Love."
Dem Franchize Boyz
Unhindered by atrocious spelling, Atlanta natives Gerald
"Buddie" Tiller, Bernard "Jizzal Man"
Leverette, Maurice "Parlae" Gleaton and Jamal
"Pimpin" Willingham (they're all in their
early 20s) went Top 10 with the single "Lean Wit It,
Rock Wit It" and appeared on a remix of Mariah
Carey's "Say Somethin'." Their
stripped-down sound is a prime example of snap music, a
hip-hop subgenre.
Lil' Wayne
After first rising to fame with the Hot Boys -- alongside
Turk, Juvenile and B.G. -- this New Orleans rapper (real
name: Dwayne Michael Carter) has released five successful
solo albums, yielding such hits as "Go DJ" and
"Fireman." Lil' Wayne, 23, wound up in big
trouble Monday, when he was arrested in Atlanta on drug
charges. Free on bond, he remained listed among the Up Close
& Personal performers at press time.
